A descendant of Hawaiian missionary families, he was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, in 1943, to the late Joan Tozzer Cave (from the Castle family) and the late Philip E. Spalding Jr. (from the Cooke family), and was raised in the Boston area. Toz graduated from Rivers Country Day School in 1962, where he played football, hockey, and baseball, forming lifelong friendships. After high school, he briefly returned to Honolulu before enlisting in the Air Force, serving as a weather observer during the Vietnam era.
Upon his discharge, he moved to San Francisco and worked in finance at Dean Witter, where he met and married Jane. They soon returned to the Boston area, and Toz completed a BS/MBA program at Boston University. He then spent the next 26 years working in the financial industry at The Boston Company (now known as BNY), retiring as a Senior Vice President in 2002.
Throughout his life, Toz and Jane raised three boys in Westwood and Sherborn, Massachusetts, and later lived in the Beacon Hill neighborhood of Boston before retiring. After spending quality time exploring North America in their beloved RV, they split their time between Newburyport, MA, and Tucson, AZ, ultimately settling in Tucson.
Toz was a longtime member of The Country Club in Brookline, MA, a Life Trustee at the Rivers School in Weston, and served on the Board of Overseers for the Museum of Science and the Building Committee for Children's Hospital, both in Boston.
He had many passions in life, including golfing, cheering for Boston University hockey, the San Francisco 49ers, and the San Francisco Giants. He also had a continuous love for new gadgets, which included his Audi e-tron. Toz especially enjoyed breakfast at diners, county fairs, and the simple joy of connecting with friends. Family traditions were very important to him; he cherished visits to the family summer home in Tamworth, NH, where he enjoyed family reunions from his perch on the screened porch, making ice cream runs, dining at Café Noche, watching sunsets from the piazza, stirring up good times, and taking naps on the couch. His friends and family celebrate his unforgettable character and deeply generous spirit.
Toz is survived by his wife of 55 years, Jane, and his three sons: David (Jessica) with son Jacob, Michael (Jodee) with son Cameron and daughter Avery, and Rob (Anna) with sons Elias and Burke. He also leaves behind siblings Phil, Anne, Joan, Susan, and Bill, as well as a large extended family and countless friends.
The Spalding family would like to express their gratitude to the wonderful staff at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, especially the entire team on Ellison 16, for the incredible care they provided to Toz and his family.
A celebration of Toz's life will be held on Sunday, September 21, 2025, from 1 to 3 PM at Blackmoor Bar & Kitchen, 1 Chelsea St., Charlestown, MA.
