I am beside myself to hear about Carlos' passing: I got a text from him only a couple of weeks ago! He said things were going well, but of course neither of us had time to talk right then... I wish I'd picked up the phone & called him!

Carlos was directly responsible for so many good things that happened in my life, when he remembered me & called me to ask if I'd be interested in coming to San Juan on active-duty "for a couple of months" (it turned out to be a year and a half): it turned out to be one of the best periods of my life due to him. Likewise, when he would visit me in New Orleans as a reservist, he brought fun and calm with him: I had some difficult times during that tour, and even just the two weeks he was there helped make it bearable. I'm forever grateful to him for his friendship and being such a wonderful shipmate.

This is such awful news: a real light in the lives of so many is gone now.

Carlos, I will truly miss you as a good friend.  Despite distance and the passing of time, I could always pick up the phone and chat with you no matter when.  You always were glad to reconnect.  Here in Spain, today, November 4th, happens to be Saint Carlos Day so your memory is foremost in my mind all the more.

Con gran sorpresa y pesar recibimos ayer la noticia del fallecimiento de nuestro amigo Carlos.  Hace sólo 3 meses paseábamos juntos por Revere, cuando comenzábamos nuestras vacaciones por Estados Unidos.  Comentábamos los planes  de visitarnos en España, para que conociéseis este país al que Carlos tenía tantas ganas de ir.  No podemos imaginar el gran vacío que habrá dejado en tantos corazones, especialmente el de Ivonne y sus hijos.  Que el Señor le tenga en la Gloria y a vosotros os dé la fuerza y fe que en estos momentos necesitáis.  Desde Madrid os mandamos un fuerte abrazo a cada uno y gracias a Carlos, nuestra amistad con vuestra familia seguirá estando intacta.  Contad con nuestra ayuda y oración.

You also told me about the dunes in the lower Cape, which I went and the hikes in New Hampshire.

I was the intern Carlos took on this summer at the DEA. In the 5 months I’ve been there Carlos has helped me immensely in not only my career, but in my life. He treated me not as an intern, but as a colleague of his own, and for that I can’t thank him enough. My thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time.

Words cannot express our sorrow for the loss of my beautiful cousin, he was the “tie” that bound our fragmented family, always reaching out to keep us connected.  We will miss him dearly.  We send our love and deepest condolences to Ivonne and the family.

What are the odds that you plan a cruise and your cousin happens to be on the same ship and neither of you knew the other was going?  When I posted I was on the ship Carlos immediately texted me “Lois, it’s Carlos, I think we’re on the same ship”.  Wow that was so great!

I will always hold Carlos dear to my heart. He was a big part of our family. He was there for us when our daughter was very sick in the hospital, and I will never forget his support in our time of fear and need. He has been there for us in the good and the bad throughtout the years, and I am so grateful for his everlasting friendship.  I send my heartfelt condolences and love to his family in their time of need.
