

Carol M. Winterbottom (Gavazza), a beloved and kind-hearted individual, passed away on February 1, 2026, at the age of 88. Born on October 4, 1937, in Sagamore, Massachusetts, she was the cherished daughter of the late Giovanni and Maria Gavazza (Balegno).
Growing up in Sagamore, Carol graduated from Bourne High School in 1955. She began her career working as an operator for the local phone company. In 1957, she married Frederick E. Winterbottom, and together they had two daughters, Carolyn and Marilyn. Carol's life was filled with adventure as she traveled the world with her family due to Frederick's service in the Air Force, living in places such as the Philippines, Madagascar, and Greece.
Upon returning to the United States, Carol worked as a receptionist at a local veterinary clinic, where her compassionate and generous nature shone through. She had a deep love for the Boston Red Sox and was particularly fond of animals, especially cats and dogs, often taking in homeless cats and caring for them.
Carol was a devoted mother to Carolyn Rogers and her husband Steve Burnham of Buzzards Bay and Marilyn McGrath and her husband Mike McGrath of Orlando, Florida. She is also survived by her niece’s, Debbie Dobbins, Theresa Towers, Kathy Stubstad, and nephew Steve Gazza, and many other family members. She is preceded in passing by her siblings, Antonio Gavazza, Emiliano Gavazza, and Madeline Mula, and her nephew Richard Gavazza.
A private burial at Massachusetts National Cemetery will take place at a later date, where she will be laid to rest alongside her husband.
