Dorothy (AKA Dottie, Mrs. Woodside, Mimi & Cinderella) was born and raised in Roslindale and graduated from Hyde Park HS in 1958. She was a Boston Bruins season ticket holder and worked as a switchboard operator on State Street in Boston. She married her husband, Woody, in 1965, living in East Boston & West Roxbury before moving to the Cape in 1971 & settling in Buzzards Bay to raise their 4 children. Dottie was a stay at home mom for most of their childhood, & attended every game, concert or fundraiser in which her kids were involved. She was the unofficial lifeguard at Bumps Pond, and enjoyed providing babysitting services in her home. Well known for her gift of gab, deviled eggs, Texas Potatoes, & answering the phone with a “Hil-lou”, she also enjoyed Irish music. Upon her husband’s retirement, she took on part-time employment as a cafeteria worker in the Bourne Schools, an assistant at Discovery Preschool, a ticket-taker for the MIAA and the Voting Poll Warden.
She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren & girlfriends. Always a Boston Girl, she drove anyone in need to Logan Airport or any city hospital, and was always at the wheel to chauffer her friends to lunches, dinners & theatrical events. Dottie was most proud of her children, and loved being with them, their friends, her extended family & the many people she met along the way.
She was predeceased by her husband “Woody”, parents Dennis & Helen, younger brothers Dennis & Edward, in-laws Edward and Josephine, brothers-in-laws George Smith, Edward and Donald Woodside, sister-in-law Rose Woodside; and her best-friend Gail Nuttall.
Dottie leaves her 4 children, Dennis (Andrea) of Pocasset, Diane of Buzzards Bay, Doreen (Debbie) of Framingham & Danny of Hermosa Beach, CA, grandchildren, Dillon, Declan, Dalton & Grayson, siblings Eileen Smith (Humarock), Jimmy and Kathy Walsh (Canton) & Patsy Lyons (Walpole), favorite nieces & nephews (and their children), her Walsh Cousins, the Cottage Society gals, the Hockey Moms and many good friends made over the years.
Her children would like to especially thank JoAnn Galligan, Sheila Fortes, All American Memory Care, Bourne Manor Skilled Nursing & Amedisys Company Hospice for the extra care they showed to their mom as she dealt with the various stages of dementia.
Visiting hours will be held Wednesday, April 12, 2023 from 10am - 1pm at Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home (40 MacArthur Boulevard – Bourne) with burial to follow at 2pm at the MA National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers donations in her memory may be made to the Bourne Food Pantry (121 Main Street – Buzzards Bay, MA 02532).
