

Born February 1, 1928 in Mooresville, NC, he was the son of the late Fred Watson Smith and Pearl Archer Smith. He was pre-deceased by his son, James R. Smith II in 1978. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He continued his education, graduating from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He was an Oral Surgeon who had private practices in both Bourne and Hyannis until 1992. He was a retired Lt. Colonel in the US Air Force and a veteran of WWII, Korea and Vietnam. He served 24 years.
He was an avid golfer who enjoyed spending the winter in Fort Lauderdale, FL. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. He was a family man who loved all who were around him. He will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Nancy H. (Howell) Smith of Bourne, his daughters, Laura Cook of Rockford, IL and Lyndalu Pieranunzi of Foster, RI, his grandchildren, James Cook of Leland, NC, Chelsey Johnson of Rockford, IL, Carl, Dean and Alayna Pieranunzi of Foster, RI and four great grandchildren.
Visiting hours will be from 10:00 am-11:00 am on Thursday, February 9, 2012 at Nickerson Bourne Funeral Home in Bourne with a service to follow at 11:00 am. Burial will be at Old Bourne Cemetery.
