
Born February 8, 1928 in Teaneck, N.J., he graduated St. Joseph’s High School in West New York, NJ. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving in the Sea Bees until the end of war and remained in Japan during the occupation. Returning to the U.S. he later joined the U.S. Coast Guard and attended Officer’s Candidate School. Commissioned as an Ensign and rising to achieve the rank of Captain.
During those years he served on many ships becoming captain of five. He served as first Commander of the National Strike Force and was Fleet Commander for Bicentennial Tall Ships 1976. He completed his final duties as Group Commander Woods Hole, 1977.
He was very active in community activities, USCG Auxiliary, American Cancer Society, Monument Beach Sportsman’s Club and most importantly as a daily attendee at St. John the Evangelist Church.
Robert is survived by his beloved wife Elaine Marie, Son Robert (Phyllis) of Hamilton, MA, daughter Karen Hanson, son Steven (Sara) of Burlington, VT and daughter Leslie A. (Patrick Bennett of North Falmouth, MA. Grandfather to Kerry, Matthew, Nicole and Danielle, uncle to many loving nieces and nephews.
A period of visitation with Robert’s family will be held Thursday, July 6, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home 40 MacArthur Blvd. Bourne, MA.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, July 7, at 10:00 a.m. in St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church 841 Shore Road, Pocasset, MA. In lieu of flowers, donations in Robert’s memory can be made to the St. Vincent De Paul Society or to the American Cancer Society.
