

Vita (Smitas) Hodges, of Plymouth, MA passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, at the LifeCare Center of Plymouth with family by her side. She was the daughter of the late Ernest and Stase (Minelga) Smitas. Vita was the wife of the late Joseph F. Hodges; beloved mother of Anita Hodges Zand (and husband Fazi) of Falmouth, Cynthia Bresnahan (and husband Mark) of Plymouth, and Kristina Mulholland of Quincy; loving grandmother of Emilio Zand (and fiancé Remy), Thomas Bresnahan (and wife Mollie), and the late Sarah Bresnahan; sister of Liūda Waingortin and the late Algis Smidtas; and a loving aunt to many nieces and nephews.
Vita was born in the Raseiniu region of Lithuania where she was raised with her sister, Liūda, and her late brother, Algis. In 1944, when the Soviet Union took over their town and home, her family fled to Germany. In 1950 her family was able to immigrate to the United States where she met and married her late husband Joseph Hodges. Vita then dedicated her life to lovingly raise three daughters in Dorchester, MA.
Proud of her Lithuanian heritage, Vita was an active member of the Lithuanian-American Community in South Boston and the Lithuanian Scout Association. She enjoyed many Lithuanian traditions such as egg-decorating at Easter and celebrating Kūčios (Christmas Eve) with traditional dishes that she prepared.
Gardening, sewing, and baking were a few of her leisure pursuits. Vita also cherished her time surrounded by family and friends at Big Sandy Pond, Plymouth, MA where the family was fortunate to spend summers. Vita was a loving, thoughtful, caring, and generous person who always thought of others. She will truly be missed by all those who knew her.
The family would like to thank all the healthcare providers at the Lifecare Center in Plymouth who gave Vita so much love, care, and friendship.
There will be a visitation on Wednesday, February 12th from 9:30-11:30am at Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home, 40 MacArthur Blvd. Bourne, MA, service to follow in the funeral home. An interment will be held at Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
