Genevieve was known as Genia to her family and friends from Brooklyn, and Jeanie to her friends in Maryland. She grew up in Brooklyn, New York on Miller Ave. and attended a Polish school and church, St. John Cantius with her two brothers, Roman and John, and her sister Helen. When her maternal uncle and his wife suddenly passed, her seven first cousins came to live with them. It was a lively household. She graduated from East New York Vocational High School in Brooklyn where she studied sewing. She obtained a position as a seamstress and worked there until she was married to Thomas C. Roberts, Jr. from Greenwood, South Carolina on August 26, 1944. In August, they would have celebrated their 70th anniversary.
Genevieve loved to be with her family and friends. Her life in Brooklyn came to life as she laughed and recounted her funny stories. Everywhere she went, she found people from Brooklyn. Her other love was her Polish heritage. She spoke Polish and stayed in touch with many of her cousins and classmates; the Zdrodowskis, the Lapinskis, the Brzyzowskis, the Penofskis, the Fedors, the Starrs, the Wilkockis and the Borowskis.
She was always willing to help others. For many years she volunteered with the National Association of the Blind, belonged to the Women's Auxillary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars and was a good neighbor in her community.
Genevieve leaves behind her husband, Tom, three children Susan Shannon, Dorothy Brown and Ronald Roberts; two sons in law, Jim Shannon and Webster Dorsey; two grandchildren, Andrew Brown, Evan Brown and his wife Lauren, and three first cousins Lottie Portale, Helen Colton and Ann Stemler.
