

Herb Hutson, a 50 year Bowie resident, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 2 at Anne Arundel Medical Center. He was 85. Herb was born in Arlington, Virginia on December 6, 1926. A 1944 graduate of Washington and Lee High School, he attended the University of Virginia before interrupting his degree to serve in World War II. There, he served with the US Army's Sixth Infantry Division in the Philippines campaign. He later participated in the liberation of Korea. He married Joan Catherine Mulcahy, of Malden, Massachusetts, on August 1, 1954. He finished his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Accounting at Strayer University. He was employed with the Federal Government, serving in the Department of Commerce, Maritime Administration, Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs (predecessor of the Drug Enforcement Agency), before finishing his 37 year career with the Federal Aviation Administration. A life long fan and enthusiast of circuses, carnivals, and trains, he then went to work for the James E. Strates Shows for several years. He also contributed to his favorite charities including the School Sisters of Notre Dame Retirement Fund and various wildlife groups. He enjoyed feeding squirrels and birds. His wife predeceased him in 1999. In later life he developed friendships with a group retirees who meet daily at McDonald's in Bowie. He is survived by his three sons, John (Kari), Bill (Joanne), and Jim (Ann), 8 grandchildren and his sister Hope Davidson. Visitation is scheduled for Friday, July 6th, 2012 at 10 a.m, followed at 11:00 by a service of remembrance at the Robert E. Evans Funeral Home, 16000 Annapolis Road Bowie, MD. Private interment will be held at Columbia Memorial Gardens in Arlington, Virginia
