

John Glenn Harwood, Sr., Age 71, a resident of Crofton, Md. died on Sunday, July 15, 2012 in Harwood, Md, at Mandarin House, where he had recently moved for Hospice care.
He was the dearly beloved husband of Frances Newton Harwood of Crofton and the brother of Terry Harwood of Easton, Md.; the loving father of John Glenn Harwood, Jr of Naperville, Illinois and Elizabeth Yates Harwood of Annapolis, Md., and loving grandfather to Adam Samuel Harwood and Sydney Love Harwood of Naperville, Illinois.
Born on August 11, 1940 and raised in Riderwood, Md., Mr. Harwood was the son of Mr. & Mrs. Francis Campau Harwood of Baltimore. Mr. Harwood graduated from Cathedral School in Baltimore, Loyola Blakefield in Towson, Md., Washington College (Mathematics) in Chestertown, Md. and the USCG Officer’s Candidate School in Yorktown, Virginia. After serving in the United States Coast Guard, Commander Harwood pursued a career with the Federal government, currently working as systems analyst with the Small Business Administration in Washington, D.C. Cdr. Harwood was an active volunteer for the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s efforts for research and treatments of Lou Gehrig’s Disease (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), and was recipient of the MDA’s Maryland Personal Achievement Award and was named as MDA’s Maryland ALS Division Chairperson He appeared on the MDA Telethon in Hollywood with Jerry Lewis, and in subsequent years actively raised funds for ALS research.
Cdr. Harwood was an active member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Bowie, Md. He served in many church positions through the years. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 21 at 10 AM at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 13106 Annapolis Road, Bowie, MD. 20720 301-262-5353, followed by burial with a lunch following at the Crofton Country Club.
