Laurence Joseph Welling, 64, of Bowie Md., passed away suddenly on Wednesday, July 10, 2019. He is survived by his loving wife of 24 years, Debra Welling, daughter Trina (Chay) Butler, stepsons Robert Tyson, Jr., Christopher Tyson, grandchildren, Gregory Welling, Angela (Richie) Roderick, Courtney (Justin) Helton, Preston Welling, Timothy J. (Jacqueline) Welling, Christopher Welling, Klarissa Humbert, Bradley Adkins, Gina Giglio Welling, Gavin Tyson, Galen Butler, great grandchildren, Weston Newton, Braylynn Welling, Carmen Welling, Ava Welling, Emma Helton, Tyler Roderick, Paxton Roderick, Kayden Welling, mother in law, Nancy Kimble, brothers, Kieran (Mary) Welling, Shawn (Angie) Welling, Stacey (Kim) Welling, sister in laws, Pam Loving, Terri Kimble, Sherri (Steve) Norris, brother in laws, John Kimble, Scott Kimble, friend and mentor, Joe Migliorise, numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and his beloved pets. He was predeceased by his parents, Laurence W. and Joann Welling, and his son, Timothy A. Welling.
Laurence was born on March 9, 1955 in Steubenville, Ohio, to Laurence and Joann Welling. They moved to Maryland when he was a child. He was fondly called Larry/ Larry Joe by family and friends.
Laurence enlisted in the Navy in 1972. He was Top Watch, Console Board Operator, Boiler Technician 3rd Class, on the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Saratoga CV60. He was awarded the National Defense Medal in January 1973. He received an Honorable Discharge in August 1976. He was very proud of his military service. He was also a big Navy football fan.
Laurence loved to learn. He attended Southeastern College, Prince Georges Community College (AA Business), University of Maryland (BS Business Admin, Personnel Mgmt. & Labor Relations), University of Maryland (MS MGMT Science, Human Resource Mgmt.). He has also taken numerous Berean courses through Global University over the years. He was a member of Phi Kappa Phi (Top 10%, UMUC), and made the Dean’s List (UMUC) in 1988, 1990, 1992.
Laurence worked for the U.S. Postal Service from 1979 until he retired in 2012. He held various positions, starting as a Letter Carrier, and working his way up in management to become a Manager, Area Manager, Postmaster, and then worked as a Retail Operations Specialist at Postal Headquarters. He served on the National and Local Labor Negotiation Teams, representing management. He received numerous awards during his time with the Postal Service.
Laurence and Debra have attended Cornerstone Church in Bowie, Maryland since 1998.
Laurence was a member of the American Legion. He recently joined Bowie CLAW because of his love and compassion for animals, especially homeless ones.
Laurence loved life. He loved Jesus. He loved his family, friends, and pets. He liked sports and taking care of his pond, fish and pets. He had a great sense of humor and he joked around often. He liked Elvis, and was never without his comb. He was dearly loved, will never be forgotten, and will forever be in our hearts.
