Leslie Howard Fletcher, affectionately known as “Lester” to Jackie’s family and friends, and “Dry” to his DC crew, was born in Washington, DC, on June 14, 1951, to the late Ernestine Virginia Fletcher and James Oliver Fletcher. He attended DC public schools and graduated from his beloved Coolidge High School in 1969. After graduating from Coolidge, Les started working at the United States Postal Service at Dulles Airport. After a year, he transferred to the Bulk Mail Center in Largo, Maryland, where he worked for over 35 years, rising to the top ranks in the U.S. Postal Service.
Lester met the love of his life (Jackie) in 1971 at a go-go in Glenarden, Maryland, where Chuck Brown and the Soul Searchers were playing. They were trying to out-dance each other. Both won that dance contest and 3 years later in 1974 traded vows and were married. In December 1976, Lester became a father to his son Kenyatta, and in April 1980 his daughter Jameka was born. He was so excited and loved being a father. He chose two of his best friends to be Godfathers, Earl James to Kenyatta, and John May to Jameka. He was so very proud when Kenyatta graduated from Morehouse in 1999 and when Jameka graduated from UMBC in 2002. He was even more excited when Jameka/David made him Pop-Pop to two granddaughters (Taylor and Morgan) and Kenyatta/Samantha made him Pop-Pop to two grandsons (KJ and Isaiah).
Lester was such a social person, he loved giving parties and attending social events. He also insisted on looking “sharp” ALL THE TIME. He supported everyone he knew in all sorts of ways. He loved being with family and friends. He was so very proud of having the honor of walking his “other” daughter, Kim Sands, down the aisle in the Bahamas.
One of Lester’s favorite things to do was dance, especially hand dancing with Jackie. He also enjoyed golf, tennis, and playing cards (Whist, Poker, Blackjack, Spades, and Tunk) so much he would throw card parties back in the day. If you knew Lester and he started to win at anything, the “Talking” would start and never stop!!!! He was extremely competitive at everything. He also loved finding new restaurants in the DMV and telling his friends where they should go. Lester enjoyed going to Craig Memorial Community Church. He would always talk about how it felt like home to be there on Sunday mornings.
Lester was truly loving life before the dreadful Dementia disease took over his mind.
Shout out to Complete Care at La Plata Nursing Home for taking such good care of Les in his time of need.
Lester is preceded in death by his parents Ernestine and James Fletcher, and brothers Paul and Ernie (Badelia) Fletcher.
