Phyllis J. Flippin (Carmany) of Laurel, Md, passed away October 26, 2020, after a courageous, hard-fought battle with COPD/Congestive heart failure. She died peacefully at the Mandrin Chesapeake Hospice House in Harwood, Maryland which is run by The Hospice of the Chesapeake. As a family, we are comforted by the professional and compassionate care they administered to Phyllis in her last few days.
Phyllis was born to the late John L. Carmany and Angelina M. Tumminia, on April 11, 1945 in Camden, NJ. She graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1963, and married Robert D. Bergman shortly after graduation. Although they were only married a short time, they had one daughter together named Stacy Ann Bergman.
In December of 1969, Phyllis married Richard L. Flippin, and they lived together in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Nevada, Southern California, Colorado, Virginia, Maryland, and Delaware, and were married a week shy of 50 years. Phyllis was predeceased by her husband on Thanksgiving Day, 2019. She was also predeceased many years ago by her only sibling, John L. Carmany, Jr. She is survived by her daughter Stacy Bergman Garza, her son-in-law John Wehner, and her cherished granddaughters, Gina Marie Garza, and Nicole Ann Garza, as well as several nieces and nephews – David Carmany, Shawn Carmany, Michele Carmany, Alan Bergman, Michael Bergman, John Bergman and Kathleen Bergman; along with several great nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her nephew Todd Carmany.
Phyllis was extremely proud of her Italian heritage and her Camden, New Jersey roots. She often said she was “Camden Strong” and urged her daughter and granddaughters to stay “Camden Strong” too in the days leading up to her death. She was an extremely loyal friend, and kept in touch with everyone she knew from all over the country. She was fiercely devoted to and protective of her family, especially the pride and joy’s of her life-Stacy, Gina and Nicole, and the family pets, especially her beloved Mollie. Phyllis will always be remembered for her kindness and generosity, her photos in Seventeen Magazine, her fondness for fashion and decorating, and her love for family, friends and Chardonnay. She will be missed more than words can express, and loved forever!
A private Celebration of Life will take place in Stone Harbor, New Jersey in August, 2021, due to Covid.
In lieu of flowers please consider donating to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, which meant a great deal to Phyllis during her life, or The Hospice of the Chesapeake, which cared for her in her final days.
