Mr. Virgil Wayne Wilson Sr., age 79, of Bowie, Maryland, passed away into the arms of Jesus as he slept peacefully on Thursday, April 7, 2022. Virgil was born November 24, 1942, in Vernon, TX., to the late E. Vernon and E. Lorene Wilson.
Virgil grew up in the small town of Vernon, Texas. His first job out of school was Crawford Painting. He then joined the United States Navy in 1960, where he served as a firefighter and deckhand until his discharge in 1964. Virgil loved his time in the Navy and spoke highly of times spent traveling but loved being stationed in Japan.
After he departed from the Navy in 1964, he found the love of his life, Karen Wilson, and they were soon married. The two remained married for over 30 years. Virgil and Karen had two children, Veronica and Virgil Jr., and lived in the Northern Virginia area. Virgil worked various jobs during his adult years, starting with Anthony Pools, which transferred him to the East Coast.
He worked as a carpenter, painter, and drywaller with various construction companies while raising his children. He started his own home improvement businesses, K&V Contractors and Helping Hand Handyman Service, both of which he was the sole proprietor. He finished his career working as a lead trim carpenter for Ace Carpentry in Manassas, VA, where he received many awards for his hard work and craftsmanship.
Virgil is survived by his daughter, Veronica Wheeler (Paul) of Bowie, MD, and his son Virgil Wilson, Jr. (Michelle) of Chula Vista, CA. He has been preceded in death by his grandson, Zachary. He has left behind nine grandchildren; Ken, Cassidy, Brandon, Abigail, Chris, Carmen, Jesus, Dayana, Rosa, and one great-granddaughter, Madelyn. He also leaves behind two brothers, Roy(Pat) and Donald(Patsy).
Virgil always loved being a jokester and making everyone laugh. There was never a stranger he met! He was an old-timer who enjoyed Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, Gunsmoke, and other westerns. He enjoyed his Sunday afternoon naps after church. His pastimes included knitting, watching NASCAR, and playing games on his Kindle.
One thing we as his family will always remember and cherish about him is his suggestion of ice cream whenever you were having a bad day, didn't feel well or were just in a bad mood. He stood by the fact that ice cream made everything better.
The family wants to express our heartfelt thanks for the outstanding care from the doctors and nursing staff at the following facilities in the last six months! Sentara Hospital, Woodbridge, VA, INOVA-Fairfax, Fairfax, VA, Burke Rehabilitation Center, Burke, VA, Anne Arundel Medical Center, Annapolis, Maryland, Capital Region Medical Center, Lanham, MD, and Larkin Chase Rehabilitation Center, Bowie, MD.
