longtime resident of Fairport, passed away peacefully on April 7, 2026. She was born on January 5, 1930 in Boden, Sweden, and raised by her mom and dad with her two sisters on a military base. She loved art, music, nature, and above all, riding horses. Growing up near the Arctic Circle, Margareta began knitting sweaters at an early age. After graduating from high school, Margareta worked assisting military engineers planning fortifications in the mountains. Adventurous and determined to see the world, she answered advertisements seeking help to care for the children of wealthy families, first in England and later in the United States. Derailing her plan to head to Australia next, she met and married the love of her life for 48 years, the late Yngve S. Dahlgren, an immigrant from Sundsvall, Sweden. Both became proud, naturalized citizens of the United States. Margareta was a loving mother of Yvonne (Kenneth) Bergstrom; Karin (Michael) O’Neill, and Erik (Lori) Dahlgren; and grandmother of Andreas, Jonas, Janelle and Bradley. She served as a crossing guard with the Fairport Police Department when her kids were in elementary and middle school, and later found fulfillment working in retail furniture sales for Sibley’s until retiring. Margareta continued her favorite hobby of knitting sweaters throughout retirement. She created hundreds throughout her lifetime, the majority warmly given away. Margareta was loved by family, friends, co-workers and neighbors and will be missed immeasurably. A private gathering to celebrate her life will be held at a later date.
