Richard Elting Castleberry, 77, of Newburgh NY, passed away peacefully on March 5, 2025, surrounded by his family.

Born on May 31, 1947 to William and Carol (nee Elting) Castleberry, Richard lived a full and rich life defined by his love for his family, his dedication to his work, and his deep appreciation for history.

A proud U.S. Navy veteran of the USS Mazama AE-9, Richard served with honor and later went on to pursue a successful career as an electrician. He was a valued member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 363, and for many years, he owned and operated his own business, Castleberry Electric. Richard was known for his unwavering work ethic and the integrity with which he approached every job.

Richard’s greatest joy was his family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Anita (nee Goulet) Castleberry; his children, Chris Castleberry and his wife Margaret Castleberry, Sandra Freeborn and her fiancé Joseph Farino, Luc Poulin, Peter Neckles and Alexander Neckles. He was also a proud grandfather to Henry, Evelyn and Jack Castleberry, Caitlin Edwards and her husband Drew Edwards, Emilee Freeborn, Olivia and Ethan Poulin; his sister Sue Ann Fleming and her husband David Fleming; and many nieces and nephews. Dearest brother-in-law of the late Corad (Gemma) Goulet, the late Clemance Goulet, the late Alma (late Roland) Goulet, the late Bernadin (late Paulin) Goulet, Julien (Jocelyn) Goulet, Jean Marie (late Louisette) Goulet, Jean Louis (Ginette) Goulet, late Celia (Yvon) Goulet, Norbert (late Elianne) Goulet, Emilia (Renee Paul) Vachon and Julia (late Lionel) LaPierre. His legacy of love and support will continue to live on in the hearts of his children and grandchildren.

In addition to his family and work, Richard had a deep passion for history, especially the Civil War. His knowledge and enthusiasm for the subject were contagious, and he enjoyed sharing his love for history with anyone who would listen. Richard’s passion for learning and his curiosity about the past were just a few of the many qualities that made him so special.

Richard was a sports fanatic. He was a big fan of the NY Giants and Alabama football.

Richard Castleberry will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him. His memory, wisdom, and love will live on forever in the hearts of those he leaves behind. May he rest in peace.
