Born on May 23, 1946, Fred lived a life defined by kindness, generosity, curiosity, and quiet excellence. He was a true gentleman—thoughtful, creative, and deeply engaged with the world around him. A lifelong lover of the arts, Fred had a discerning eye for fine art and delighted in collecting it. He was also an accomplished artist himself, finding joy and expression in watercolor and acrylic painting, and occasionally exploring sculpture. His days were often enriched by a fine cigar, a good book, a glass of wine, and travel—pleasures he savored with intention and gratitude.
Fred was a proud graduate of Emory University and went on to become a Board-Certified Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, dedicating more than four decades to the care of his patients. From 1981 until his retirement in February 2023, Dr. Atwell practiced with distinction in Anniston and Gadsden, Alabama, and in Carrollton, Georgia. He was widely respected not only for his clinical skill and professionalism, but also for his compassion, integrity, and the genuine care he showed every patient and colleague. His career was marked by service, humility, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.
After retiring, Fred and his family moved to Bradenton, Florida, where he embraced a well-earned and joyful retirement, continuing to create art, travel, and spend cherished time with loved ones.
Fred is survived by his devoted wife, Susan Atwell; his son, David (“Tony”) Atwell, NP, and daughter-in-law Dodie Pettit Atwell; and his beloved grandchildren, Morgan, Zoe, Marina, and Ethan Atwell, of Sarasota, Florida, who were a constant source of pride and joy.
He is also survived by his sister, Susan (Jim) Teal, of Pensacola, Florida, along with several nieces, nephews, cousins, and a wide circle of close friends and professional associates whose lives were enriched by knowing him.
Fred was preceded in death by his son, Brian Atwell, DVM, of Maui; his parents, George Atwell, Sr. and Margie Rivas Atwell; and his mother-in-law, Sadie Bolch.
Fred will be remembered as a loving husband and father, a devoted grandfather, a gifted surgeon, an artist at heart, and a man whose quiet generosity and warmth left a lasting impression on everyone he met. His legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched—with skill, compassion, and grace.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Fred’s memory to one of his favorite charities: Interfaith Center of Concern (Anniston, Alabama), Anniston Soup Bowl, or Rainbow Omega, Inc. (Eastaboga, Alabama).
