

Richard “Dick” Elwell Amesbury (1946-2025) passed peacefuIly on March 20, 2025 in Lakewood Ranch, Florida. He is survived by his beloved wife of 49 years, Eileen (Hogan); his daughters, Sarah (Fernando Campos) and Quinn (Omair Ahmed), his cherished grandchildren, Nando and Luca Campos, and Laith and Noor Ahmed. He also leaves behind his sister, CaroI Tedoldi, and brother, Bob Amesbury. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Betty Amesbury.
Dick will be most remembered for his kindness, support, and quiet strength, punctuated by hilarious one-liners that were timed perfectly. While practical and focused day-to-day, he was passionate about his family, golf, and sailing. As a father, he was steadfast in preparing his daughters for the world, always sharing how proud he was of the lives they built. Despite voicing frustration with his game most of the time, Dick Loved to golf and took every opportunity to improve his game, enjoying the Florida sunshine even if he wasn’t hitting well. Attending the Masters was a once in a lifetime highlight for him. Dick showcased his adventurous side on a sailboat. He grew up sailing and for years his perfect vacation was bareboat chartering in the British Virgin Islands. His girls would hold on tight as he relished getting a strong burst of wind and good heel.
Dick grew up in Wellesley, Massachusetts, graduated from Wellesley High School and attended Union CoIlege in New York, where he was president of his fraternity and the Interfraternity Council. After graduation, he joined the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam war and attended Officer Candidate School. He rose to the rank of Lieutenant, serving aboard various destroyers throughout the Mediterranean.
After completing his military service, Dick got his MBA from Pace University in New York and went on to build a successful career at Mobil Oil Corporation and subsequently ExxonMobil Corporation. He had various jobs, including Controller of Florida Phosphate Operations, and ran several businesses within the Corporations.
In retirement, Dick dedicated his time and expertise to the Manatee County Habitat for Humanity in Florida. Initially drawn to the organization by his passion for woodworking, he soon lent his leadership skills as well, serving for a time as President of the chapter.
Memorial contributions may be made in his name to the Michael J Fox Foundation or the Parkinson's Foundation
A service will be held on May 30, 2025, 11 :00 am at the Sarasota National Cemetery. All friends are invited to attend, followed by an informal gathering at Robert Toale & Sons Celebration of Life Center, 4310 Solutions Lane, Lakewood Ranch, FL 34211, from 12:00 - 2:00 pm.
