Born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Ron was the youngest of nine children raised by parents Harry and Jennie Mae Armstrong. Growing up in a large, close-knit family, he inherited a strong work ethic from his father and brothers, along with enduring values that guided his life’s journey.
For over 57 years, Ron was a devoted and loving husband to Carol Lash Armstrong. Together they built a life full of cherished traditions, cross-country adventures, and a home where they raised their family and made lasting memories. Their marriage was a true partnership, rooted in respect, lighthearted humor and deep, abiding love.
Ron proudly served his country as a Captain in the U.S. Army Dental Corps, at Fort Dix, New Jersey. Following his tour of duty, he went on to establish endodontic offices in Dayton, OH; Columbus, IN; and Indianapolis, IN. After more than forty years as an endodontist, he and Carol retired to Lakewood Ranch, Florida.
Ron had a gift for making people feel welcome, and his happiest moments were spent in the company of lifelong friends and family. His decades-long friendship with best friend, Larry Clemons, was filled with golf games, storytelling, analyzing IU basketball games and unwavering camaraderie. One of his most treasured trips was traveling to Scotland to explore the roots of the Armstrong clan—an experience that brought together his love of history and sense of wonder.
Ron was left-handed, a trait that suited him well—he always saw things a little differently, reminding everyone that marching to your own rhythm is something to be celebrated. He wasn't big on using instructions, his family teased him as doing so would "take the fun out" of building whatever needed put together. The same applied to maps or directions; he never made a "wrong turn" on trips because it was always an "adventure", something his family learned to embrace and add to their special memories.
Ron was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Martha Ann, and his brothers Merritt, Bob, Harry, Nolan, Dean, and Ernie. He leaves behind his beloved wife Carol, his children Kim Arnold (Jim) and Mike Armstrong, and his grandchildren, Luke and Morgan Arnold, who were the light of his life. He is also survived by his brother Norman Armstrong, his brother-in-law and sister-in-law Steve and Kathy Lash, and a large circle of nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations in Ron’s memory to the MD Anderson Cancer Center (mdanderson.org/gifts), Tidewell Hospice Foundation (tidewellfoundation.org), or a charity of your choice.
