Stephen "Steve" M. Satir, age 80, passed away at his home in Sarasota, Florida on August 19, 2025. A devoted father, proud grandfather, and beloved friend, Steve brought warmth, wit, and wisdom to every chapter of his life.
Born and raised in Tenafly, New Jersey, Steve was a gifted athlete who excelled in basketball and baseball at Tenafly High School. His talent led him to Gettysburg College, where he played Division I basketball and baseball. In 2001, he was inducted into the Tenafly High School Athletic Hall of Fame in recognition of his achievements. Steve earned his BA from Gettysburg and later received an MBA from Fairleigh Dickinson University.
A proud veteran, Steve served as a Naval Officer during the Vietnam era from 1967 to 1970, and continued in the Naval Reserve until 1994, retiring with the rank of Commander. His professional career was equally distinguished, with executive roles at AT&T and Tyco International. In retirement, Steve shared his love of learning and sports with younger generations—teaching in Ramsey and Mahwah, NJ, and officiating basketball, baseball, and track & field.
Steve will be remembered for his charismatic presence and his ability to strike up meaningful conversations wherever he went. Some of his happiest moments were spent on his lanai in Florida with a newspaper in hand, attending sporting events (especially college basketball), enjoying martinis and dinners out with his partner Deborah, talking with his daughter about her work as a psychologist, or spending time with his granddaughter at the park or pool.
Steve is survived by his beloved daughter Dana, cherished granddaughter Saoirse, and son-in-law Robert Flanagan. He is also survived by his sister, Barbara McCullough; his former wife, Lois Voight; and the love of his later years, Deborah Albero. He was predeceased by his dear partner of 20 years, Carol Hawthorne.
A burial is planned at Sarasota Memorial Cemetery on March 16, 2026. A celebration of Steve’s life will be held in New Jersey in the summer of 2026. In his honor, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Children’s Hospital Colorado—causes close to his heart.
Steve lived with humor and heart. He leaves behind a legacy of service, sportsmanship, and generous spirit.
