Thanks Jimmy for sharing your precious memories of Daddy with all of us.  You held a very special place in his heart. He always looked forward to your visits from Mt Vernon at Christmas time. He always spoke so highly of you and bragged about your accomplishments.  He always teased you but at the same time called you his Jimmy Boy.  He held close relationships with the boys in the family and you were one of his stars.  He was a  very proud man who seldom spoke of love, but always showed it  in his own ways, and one of his ways was by calling you his "Jimmy Boy".   He loved you as much as he loved his own children.  Again,  thank you for sharing your beautiful memories it brings warmth  and comfort to my heart and soul.

Dear Daddy thinking about you this thanksgiving wishing you were still with us.  I know that god has you and someday we will be reunited.  Love you and think about you all the time. My dear father in heaven on July 9th you would have been 95.  Daddy you lived to be 94 .  I cannot put into words how strong a man that you were.  Brave soldier right up until the end.  You never ever showed your family that you were or could be a coward.  When I am in my car driving alone I will often think about you and so many many memories  come to me.  There is one quote that plays out in my mind that you said.  They have their wings now so they can fly.  Meaning all your children.  I am now tearing up and so heartbroken.  You were a good honest man and so so smart.  You knew each one of your children's personalities from the inside out.  All 9 of us.  You were a man that could not be fooled.  I miss you daddy but I know I will see you again some day.  July 9th has come and gone but I know that you are just over that horizon . Your loving daughter Beulah.  This is dedicated to his beloveth wife my mother .

I would like to pay special tribute to you Daddy on Father's Day. It is our first Father's Day without you and I am faced with many memories of you.
I would usually call and give lots of good wishes for the day. It was usually a good day for you to get together with the rest of the family since your winter in Florida. I would have visited you there. Usually Father's Day would be a good time to start planning for summer vacation and your July birthday. Just talking about it would seem to make you happy.
I must give deep appreciation to my husband ,Jim, who treated you as well as his own father. He loved you too and will miss your friendship and golf. I feel very blessed that my son ,son in law and husband are all excellent fathers too .God love you.We know you would still be with us if you could. Love your daughter, Ada & Jim-ILLINOIS

For Ada and her family, Dr. Chow, Jimmy and his family, Jacqueline and her family... I know you are missing him but you will see him again when God wills.   Prayers for all of you and the rest of the extended family!

I am so sorry that I didn't know of his passing!  Ada and Dr. Chow were some of the most important influences in my life, and Ada's father reminded me so much of my grandfather that I feel like I have lost him again.   My condolences to the family and I feel privileged for having met him.

To Grandpa Scott (most of the younger cousins call you “Poppy”):

I used to try to look out for you.  I couldn't have been more than 3 years old, but I knew smoking was bad.  I didn't know it was bad for your lungs, or that it would ultimately cause emphysema, but I did know that it was bad.  I don't remember this, but you once told me that I used to shake my finger at you in disapproval when you'd light up a cigarette.  No judgment… I was trying to look out for you.  I think you knew that.

A few years later, our trips to Toronto became more sporadic.  We still visited frequently, as frequently as a young family could over such distance.  What I came to count on was that we would be with you and Grandma every Christmas holiday.  I saw you more often than that, but I could count on seeing you for Christmas.  It would be a late-night, early Christmas in Mount Vernon, followed by an all-nighter playing with my presents, and that awful 14-hour car trip the next morning.  I used to get terribly carsick, so that drive was especially bad for me.  But I'd still look forward to the whole thing.  I knew we'd be coming to see you & Grandma.

I came to love that damn car-ride.  Through ice storms, black ice, peeing in the urinal in the backseat, and multiple stops to puke on the side of the road, I finally grew out of the bad stuff and started to enjoy the rest.  I guess it helped that Mom & Dad got a van, but it was always that we would anticipate being with you & Grandma and the rest of the family.  The smell of saltines and cleaning supplies, salt for the front porch (you had stairs in Bramalea), grease and rubber and smokes from the basement.  You hung out in the basement with the rest of the family so that you'd spare Grandma from having to clean up the rest of the house.  I know that you loved her.

I must've been 7 or 8 when I started buying you and Grandma presents.  At first, I had no idea what to get you.  Grandma was easy: something pretty and red (my little guy, Danny, loves red too).  I'd often buy her Christmas ornaments, to go with those tweeting birds.  For you, I started with tobacco.  Not any old tobacco, but pipe tobacco.  It smelled sweet, so I thought you'd like it.  It also wasn't as bad as cigarettes, right?

When you moved to Brampton with Grandma & Uncle Richard, I missed the smell of your old garage.  I think maybe your eyesight wasn't as good.  Or maybe you lost interest.  You didn't seem to spend as much time tinkering with your car then.  Of course, maybe your car was just more reliable.  Nonetheless, I became interested in tools.  They smelled like your old garage.  And they reminded me of you.  

I used to find a particularly interesting tool every year and give it to you as a Christmas present.  It seemed so very “Grandpa”.  It was grease and hardened steel to blend with the cinnamon and cider and cloves.  Almost just like you.  I think you recognized that too.  You started to respond in the same way.  I'd give you a tool each Christmas, and you'd get me one in return.  I remember you'd tell me what it was good for too, once I opened it.  I got my first socket wrench from you.  I didn't have a car; I wasn't even old enough to drive.  I still have that socket wrench.

I've got a huge collection of tools now.  Some I use more than others.  I've moved my own office into my garage as well.  It is where I go to get things done.  I hang out there with friends to play darts and drink beer.  It smells of grease and steel.  Maybe I can't shake that part of being a Campbell.  Maybe I don't want to.

I miss you Grandpa.

Visited Daddy's grave site yesterday with Richard, than played a round of golf in his honor...reflected back to games played with him many a time...also lingered on the hole that he had two holes in one on...that felt sad...I used his balls and most of his tee's that he had in his cart..I even used his half tee's which he kept in a container that he had picked up and kept.. very resourceful he was...It was a sad round of golf but we got a lot of laughter as well from some of the things he had done on the golf course...like the one time he drove his cart across the green...or hitting a chip shot with his three wood...or driving his golf cart into a tree than having to drive around with one headlight...The day was all about Daddy and how much we truly miss him and wished he  was still here to play the game with us ... just one more time!!! Lots of love to you Daddy from Richard and I...

With a sly grin, and a bristly mustache, you wink, and mutter a whispy comment under your breath, chasing me around the wintery step.  I squeal and crunch up the steps, into the house.  A hint of your aftershave lingers, then fades, like the hand that nearly catches my back.   Into the house I run, with the Christmas tree, the chirping birds, the presents, the tube socks lining the banister, and the gathered family.  You catch me up into a sturdy, strong, bear hug.  "Com'ere, Scrooger," you say.

March 6, 2013 was the day daddy you passed away.  There is not a day goes by that I do not think about you.  I have so many memories of you.  I want to share this one with everyone.  We were building a cottage and the land needed to be cleared first.  Big trees had to come down.  Mark was 2 at the time he is now 29.  It was a forest and there were trees everywhere.  My father looked up and pointed to each of the trees and knew which ones had to come down.  I now know why because when he was a young man he would go into the woods and help his father who was a logger.  I will never forget.  Your loving daughter Beulah

It's a cool, but sunny day here today, but as I sit here and enjoy the heat from the sun, I think about Daddy...how much he loved the sunshine...this past winter, he would walk back and forth from his chair to the window counting the number of days left before summer...he was really looking forward to some sun, and his first tan, which he would do every year...at 94 he was still preparing for a summer of sun.....tanning....simply awesome!!! Had a nice visit at Daddy's gravesite on Mother's Day with Mommie, Richard, and Ada....I could feel his presence, picture his half smile, asking what are you doing, something he would say, whenever we would meet...then  he would throw a few shots at me ... like when are you going to cut that hair or at least comb it?? Or have you been on the golf course all day instead of doing your housework??? He loved to get you going, than he 'd giggle...and settle into some conversation, and if I had him on a really good day, he would tell me all about the war...lol I was very happy to visit him on that special day, I know that's what he would have wanted, I plan on going again on Father's day maybe bring a chair and sit with him for awhile....comb my hair and talk about the war....I love you Daddy..see you soon!!! I just got back from spending Mother's Day in Toronto. Everyone is still sad. We had a chance to visit Daddy's final resting place in the Veteran's Section at Meadowvale. What a lovely sunny spot it is right in the entrance next to the Korean War Memorial Wall.His golf cart is ready in the garage just waiting for the golf course which just opened. It is a very lonely feeling there with his presence all over the garage. What a big empty loss we all feel knowing that his absence is final. God love you Daddy. Daddy, where do I begin?  As far back as I can remember you when I was young was back in Deer Lake in the little white house.  All nine  brothers and sisters and you were alway working, either in the woods or driving a grader.  We were poor, but that little white house was always filled with love, and I can remember the delicious smells of Mommie cooking and baking.   When you came home from work you were always so happy and fun. Even tho you were exhausted from work you always found time for all of us.   Certain memories will always remain in my heart forever.  I remember the time when I was around 4 years old  you took me to town for an ice cream skipping all the way there, on the way back home you swung me up on your shoulders and whistled and sang to me....."Pearl, Pearl, Pearl, won't you be my girl".  I will never forget that song, or that special moment that we shared.   I remember the Black Bear, I remember blueberry picking with you, I remember fishing with you, as tho it was yesterday.    I remember the time when we left that little while house in Deer Lake.  I remember you selling that house in Deer Lake and buying a blue station wagon with it, I remember you tying the TV to the roof of the car, I remember you saying and pulling the rope so tight with your strong hands, "this won't ever come off". I have so many memories. I remember the drive from Newfoundland to Ontario, I remember our family of nine moving in with your brother, Uncle June, whom you loved dearly.   I remember when I was 8 years old and by this time we had moved to Shoreham Court, it was our first home in Downsview.  I remember a time when I was sick and I woke up screaming, I couldn't get my breath and ran to your room.  You and Mommie got out of bed you boiled the kettle for me to put my face over the steam so I could breath, I remember you giving me molasses on a spoon, and saying here Pearl  this will help you, I'm going to get the car ready to take you to the hospital, I remember you holding me tight and saying its going to be okay. I don't think that the Molasses worked, but I remember I had already felt better.   Every Sunday, we would go to Knob Hill Farms for our groceries, and like clock work we would go to the Dairy Queen after for our sunday drive for ice-cream.  I remember the return trips to Deer Lake, your special place that you loved so much. There was no where else on the island that you loved anymore than you loved Deer Lake.  I remember your stories about you when you were growing up.  You were tough and you gave your mother a hard time, cause you would rather go fishing than go to school.  You would laugh about it, and say "my poor mother, I've got her drove off her head, see she use to think I was in school, but I went fishing instead". I remember our Christmas celebrations the most, always so many gifts under the tree, and you always got a prank gift, it was so much fun watching you opening up your gifts, cause you knew it was gonna be a big laugh about something.  I remember you in your later years, so strong and determined to live on.  Always wondering when the next celebration was gonna be and where you were gonna go next.  You never turned down an invitation.  I remember you making home brew, and saying "Pearl, look where there's fruit, there's alcohol."  I remember your stories, always telling them about your trips overseas.  You could talk for hours about your time overseas.  You were a very proud man, but yet you were so humble.   You wore such beautiful clothes, you took such pride in dressing nice, you and Mommie looked so beautiful together and you complimented each other so well.  You accomplished so much in your life, with such little education, you self taught.  You connected with my children and grandchild, like they were your own.  You treated them with so much love and compasion  and have left your mark on their souls, as you have done to me.  I am so proud to call you my father and I will brag about you until I die.  You were the best father a daughter could ever ask for, I would never have traded you for anyone else in this world.  My memories, of you will live forever in my heart and soul.

Uncle Scott, cannot believe you are gone home. Many thoughts, prayers and condolences sent to the entire family. Had I known that Uncle Scott's funeral was in Brampton, I would have been there. I was close to Brampton.

Remembering My Grandpa:  
Almond Scott Campbell

      I don't know where to begin to tell the story about my Grandpa and his life, I think that Major Sharpe said it best when he said, “How do you begin to tell a story about a man that lived 94 years….”   I am lucky to say that I have so many fond memories of him, both as a child and an adult.  There are some things that I will never forget about my Grandpa; his life, his spirit and his heart.  Here are some of his stories and my memories of Poppy: 
 
? The black bear in Deer Lake, I was never there but I remember the story of how my Grandpa had a black bear as a pet! Only my Grandpa was brave enough to befriend a bear! 
? The little white house in Newfoundland, where he raised nine children; my wonderful aunts and uncles.  
? The story of the station wagon travelling to Toronto with Grandma, all their children and the TV tied to the roof of the car.  Imagine that!  
? The house in Brampton and all the Christmas gatherings, he always enjoyed a social gathering. 
? Making salmon flies in his past time, I can imagine him reminiscing about his times on the Humber River in Deer Lake.  
? Fishing, he loved to fish! In his later years he spent a lot of time fishing on the beach in Florida. Sometimes I think he was trying to snag a shark. 
? His Tan! He loved to bask in the sun and he always had a tan! 
? He was always well dressed and never without a shave.  
? He loved to eat out, his favorite was the “all you can eat buffets.” He used to tell me that you always got the best deal for your money.   
? His lazy boy, he never had a lazy bone in his body but he loved to tip back and relax in that chair. 
? Golfing was another of his hobbies; At 94 years old he still went golfing! Did you know that he only used three clubs? Ask my Auntie Donna the story.  I remember golfing with him and he never wanted to lose a ball, he didn't care about the crocodiles lurking about. He was a brave man.  
? He fought in World War II for the Royal British Air Force.  He loved to reminisce about his time spent overseas, especially his time spent in South Africa.  
? He loved spicy food, I remember him being very fond of hot sauce.  
? He loved to tease my brother, he always called him “Mikey” 
? He loved children, and he especially loved to tease them, the last time I saw my Grandpa he was teasing little Scotty.  
? He spoke his mind; he would tell you exactly what he thought. 
? He fought cancer and won; his strength was insurmountable      
? He loved Newfoundland. 
? He liked to talk about the weather. 
? He didn't like the winter because he loved to be outdoors. 
? He was a snow bird and travelled to Florida every year.  
? He loved my Grandma.  
? He wasn't much of a singer but he liked to dance. 
? His favorite song was “Danny Boy”  
? He had a strong handshake…this list could go on and on…
   
I wrote only a few snapshots of my Grandpa's life, he truly touched many generations of our family and his spirit will continue to live on.  I love and miss you Grandpa, I will forever miss your strong hugs and your warm heart.  Rest in Peace and God Bless. Love always, your Grandaugter, Nicole

There's no doubt about it, that our Poppy was the celebrity of the family.
And there's no doubt about how difficult it will be for many of us.
However, I would like to take a moment to re-direct our focus
to what an amazing family he has left us here with today.
As strong as we know him to be, we cannot forget how strong we are too,
and how strong he made us.
Because it is that kind of strength, that will ripple through our generations,
and that kind of strength,
that will crash up against the rocks like the waves in Newfoundland.
Not only do we carry on our Grandfather's stregnth,
but we carry on our Grandmother's beautiful eyes.
My heart goes out to everybody today,
As I look around I am so grateful to see those who are still here with us.
Especially to my mother today on her Birthday.
You see, Mom and Poppy shared something in common.
Something I believe to be the true secret to a long and youthful life.
And that is to not let anything get you down.
But it is genuine, because they truely do not sweat the small stuff.
In fact, they actually enjoy tormenting all of us
who havent quite got that figured out yet.
But our “Auntie Donna” has not only been a mother to me
but a mother to many of us in the family.
We would not be standing as tall today
without her incredible, incredible stregnth.
I just wanted to take a brief moment to thank her deeply.
My heart goes out to everybody,
but particularily to my Grama and my Uncle Richard.
For they have also lost their best friend.
It is important to re-inforce that we love and care about you dearly.
And when you are feeling alone,
I can only hope that you have the stregnth to reach out to us,
because we are still here with you on this beautiful sunny March day.

R. Scott Campbell Tribute

Thank you  everyone  for  coming  to  the  Celebration  of  my  Father's life.
My  Dad  was  a  true Newfoundlander.
He  worked  hard to  raise all  his  children but  he  always  found also time  to  play.
He loved the  great  outdoors and  we  shared walking  for  miles to  get to  his  favourite fishing  spots in  the  woods.
He would  spend days  pushing and  holding  me  on  a  bicycle trying  to teach  me  how  to  ride.  I  was  a  slow  learner, but  Daddy  never  gave up.
I remember  also when  most  of  us  went  blueberry  picking, we  would compete to  see  who  could  get  the  most, Katie always  won.
He also fancied himself as  a  barber and  you  should  have  seen  the hair  cuts he  gave my  brother Bill  and  I.   He never did perfect it.
Another one of  his  talents was creating designer hockey sticks,from broken parts and  pieces of  plywood.  This was a topic conversation with  the other kids, but we scored many goals.
Many times Daddy and I  sat and talked about  his experiences during  the Second World War  and his travels throughout Europe, South Africa and what he  had seen and experienced.
He loved  to travel,liked sports and  a great debate.
He enjoyed Newfie music,a good Hoedown and  a  beer.
He had a unique sense of  humor and  loved teasing people,but most  of  all he  was a  dedicated hardworking family man.
I am proud to  call him  my Dad and  I  will really miss him.

Aunt Daisy and family, Sorry to hear of Uncle Scott's passing. I will always remember his visits at the cabin,especially the time he brought me a dog in his raglan when he arrived home on the train. Aunt Daisy and Family - We are so sorry to hear of Uncle Scott's passing.  And now another Campbell has gone to join Mom and Pop Campbell !   Uncle Scott stories have always been a big part of every Campbell gathering - from his war days when Mom Campbell received a telegram saying he was sick and she thought it really meant he was  killed in action , to his life in Deer Lake , family visits to Toronto and his visits back here .  There has been much joy and laughter added to the story telling with yarns about Uncle Scott .  These stories will be passed down through the next generations so they will understand what  makes up that unique flavor  of  Campbell heritage  that cannot be surpassed by any other family.  We cannot be with you at this time but  be assured that our thoughts and prayers are with you  and we are sure your own special memories  of Uncle Scott will no doubt help all of you through the days ahead.
