Doris Stewart of Bramalea, Ontario passed away on February 5, 2016. After 88 years of good health, poor health still came too quickly in her final week. Born Doris Marie Phillips on September 6, 1927, in Sault Ste. Marie. Doris always recalled happy memories of growing up in the Sault and had a group of girlfriends from the Sault who shared life and laughter every step of the way for over 80 years. Predeceased by husband Gerald (of Leeburn, Ontario) and brother Harold. Beloved mother of Michael (Victoria), Bill (Sue – deceased), Anne (Gary), and Patricia (Joe). Proud grandmother of Christopher, Jeffery, Jonathan, Francesca, Grant, Jessica, Megan, Noah (Kerri Anne), and Rebekah and great grandmother of Elijah and Hailey Anne.
Doris attended Teachers’ College starting at age 17 and taught for several years before enrolling at the University of Toronto and later Queen’s University, receiving her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1954. Following marriage in 1956 family life took she and Gerald to London, then to North York and finally to Bramalea in 1968 where they fully embraced life in the then brand-new community. In 1973 Doris returned to teaching part-time and loved teaching kindergarten every year until she retired in 1992.
Doris’s concern was always for others - whether it was for extended family in difficult circumstances, her commitment to social justice or her compassion for the needy. Her family will deeply miss her strong, consistent, and loving presence – and wonderful family dinners hosted around her table in Bramalea for 48 years.
A funeral service to mark Doris’ life will be held on Saturday February 13 at 11:00 a.m. at Emmanuel United Church, 420 Balmoral Drive, Brampton Ontario. Friends and family will be received for visitation on Friday February 12 from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. at Andrew’s Community Funeral Centre, 8190 Dixie Road, Brampton, Ontario L6T 5N9. A public graveside service will be held in Algoma District at Aberdeen Cemetery at a summer date to be decided.
The Stewart family wishes to express their thanks to staff of Brampton Civic Hospital. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the 614 Salvation Army Regent Park, Toronto, Emmanuel United Church, Bramalea or to another charity of choice.
