Lynda Leah Rosemary Payne (nee Pyke), a beloved wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother and friend, passed away peacefully on February 11th, 2025 in Brampton Civic Hospital at the age of 70. She was comforted by the presence of family as her courageous fight with lymphoma came to an end.
Loving and devoted wife to Ken for over 44 years. Beloved mom to Daniel (Meghan) and to Brendan (Emily). Cherished nana to Rowan, Hailey and Liam. Predeceased by her brothers Dave (Laura) and Lloyd (Jean). Beloved sister in law to the late Mary Lynn (Paul Core), Margie (the late Frank Mountain), Sheila (Ken Hepton), the late Robert, Gord (the late Cathy), Nancy (Gord Price), Doug (the late Gayle, Kim Smith), and Don (Susan). Lynda will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by her nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Lynda was born on June 22nd, 1954 in Toronto, Ontario. Growing up, Lynda was surrounded by strong and supportive women - especially her “Gran” (the late Mary Lariviere) and mother (the late Leah Pyke). From a very young age, Lynda followed suit as a hard working and selfless caregiver in her family - at times even dressing up as a nurse to take care of her ill father. From that point forward, Lynda would seek to make others feel loved and supported through the time she spent, attention she paid, food she cooked and endless thoughtful gifts she provided.
She opened her home to extended family members and friends in need, making them feel right at home. Lynda also shone her light on others in the community. Whether it be as a Sunday School teacher at St. Jude’s Church, fundraiser for special causes or welcoming any and all neighbourhood kids into her home for a meal.
Lynda’s home was a hub of activity for her sons and their friends. Soft knocks at the front door would be welcomed by a “Come in!” by Lynda before she warmly welcomed and checked-in on her sons’ guests. These neighbourhood kids came to look at Lynda as their second mother, someone who provided unconditional warmth and sincere interest in their lives. When their home life may not have been as stable as they needed, Lynda’s home provided comforting consistency.
As a grandmother, Lynda never missed an opportunity to establish strings of connection between herself and her grandchildren. There was no mistaking the pride and joy she felt for Rowan, Hailey and Liam - it was written all over her face as she nurtured them. “Nana” also had a talent for gifting books which would teach both kids and parents about what is important in life. These books have provided comfort in the most challenging of times. Yet another example of her thoughtfulness.
With a glass of wine in hand, Lynda could often be heard singing along to her favourite Bruce Springsteen song, while cooking a hearty meal for her loved ones. She will also be remembered for her endless collection of seasonal decorations that her supportive husband helped her unpack, hang, repack and repeat each season. Lynda harnessed her creative mind and artistic talents to make special occasions that much more special for everyone. Her children were known for wearing the most creative costumes and the most coordinated outfits for every celebration.
Lynda’s passing will leave a void in the hearts of those who loved her, but her spirit will continue to inspire and guide us. Her quick wit, deep empathy, comforting hugs and ability to make everyone feel cherished will be desperately missed but never forgotten.
In lieu of flowers, Lynda’s family would appreciate donations to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada. Together we can help patients in their fight to gain a second lease on life.
Special thanks to all of the medical staff at Etobicoke General, Sunnybrook and Brampton Civic hospitals for their dedicated and compassionate care.
