Alton was born on July 3, 1928 to Isaac Joshua and Rosa Mae Motes in McRae, Arkansas, and was raised on a farm. He graduated from McRae Senior High School in 1946.
After graduation, he preached his first sermon in Centerpoint, Arkansas at the age of 19 and continued preaching until he was 87. He also had a full time job with McKesson & Robbins Wholesale Drug Co. for 35 years, moving up in the company until he became the Regional Manager of the Western United States.
Alton met Zeda Barton and they wed in 1948, going on to have 4 daughters; Sherry, Vicki, Pamela, and Rebecca. Alton and Zeda loved to sing, and family gatherings always included singing hymns. Al was always conducting Bible studies in their home. He loved to go fishing, and they also enjoyed playing pool, ping pong, dominoes and card games with their friends and family.
After retiring from McKesson, Al continued preaching but spent his free time doing the Stock Market, gardening, and watching wrestling and other sports on TV. He also was a great caregiver for Zeda when she developed Alzheimer’s until she passed away in 2011. He loved telling funny stories and jokes. He was quite the entertainer.
Alton was predeceased by his parents; his devoted wife, Zeda; 5 siblings, Cassie, Cornelius, Tollie Cecil, Melvin Vernon, and Ivan; and one granddaughter. He is survived by his younger brother, Robert; his 4 daughters, 11 grandchildren, and 26 great-grandchildren.
