Mac 96 years old, passed away on January 9, 2017, in Brandon, Florida, following a brief illness. Mac is predeceased by his wife Betty and son Alan. He leaves behind his daughter Arlana Spanos (Larry), son Donald McCabe, daughter Donna Box (Fred), daughter Lauren O’Brien (Guy), and daughter Beth Waninger (Dennis),
14 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandchild.
Mac was born and raised “Back of the Yards” in Chicago, Illinois. He enlisted in the Army on the day Pearl Harbor was attacked and served overseas in WWII, for almost
4 years. Mac received many silver and bronze stars and medals including the prestigious Croix de guerre, and most recently he received the French Legion Medal of Honor, the highest French distinction.
When the war ended, Mac returned home to marry the love of his life, Betty. He was employed by the United States Postal Service, as a letter carrier, and then as a Special Investigator with the Postal Inspection Service. He retired from the Post Office and moved with his family to Coral Springs, Florida.
Mac was an avid reader. Going to the library once a week to stock up on novels was his favorite pastime.
All that knew Mac, know of his sense of humor, along with his “famous sayings”. For example, when asked how he was doing Mac would most likely respond, “If I was any better, I’d be twins!” Never fear, his sayings continue on in this world via his family!
Burial will be at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida, sometime in the coming weeks, More will be posted as this information becomes available.
