

April 8, 2026, at the age of 83. Born in Washington, D.C., on August 14, 1942, Doris grew up in Arlington, Virginia. After graduating from Radford College with a degree in Music and Education, she moved to Virginia Beach, where she met and fell in love with a young Navy Lieutenant, John W. Overstreet Jr. Together, they shared 52 years of marriage built on a foundation of love, adventure, and mutual respect.
As a devoted Navy wife, Doris embraced the traveling life of a military family. Her journey took her to places like Pear Harbor, Hawaii and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where, in addition to raising her children, she was deeply involved in the base chapel choir, the DoD school system, and the Officers' Wives Club. These years shaped her lifelong commitment to community and her belief in the power of music to bring people together.
Doris eventually brought her vibrant spirit to Valrico, Florida.
As the beloved music teacher at Limona Elementary School, she spent decades inspiring generations of children to find their voices. Even after retiring from teaching, she continued to serve children as a volunteer Guardian Ad Litem for Hillsborough County, where she was a fierce and compassionate advocate for children in need.
A cornerstone of New Hope Methodist Church in Brandon,she was a vibrant part of the church’s daily life, active in the choir, Sunday school, numerous Bible studies, Ladies’ Circles, and the Emmaus community.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John.
Doris was a loving mother to Kristen Overstreet Martin (Daniel Martin) and John W. Overstreet III (Mitchie Overstreet), and the doting grandmother to Kaylee and Dylan Overstreet.
Arrangements are being handled by Stowers Funeral Home in Brandon, FL. In honor of her legacy, the family suggests donations to the music ministry at New Hope Methodist Church.
