John Wayne Matta, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and proud United States Army veteran, passed away peacefully on February 27, 2026, surrounded by his loved ones. He leaves behind a legacy of strength, loyalty, and deep love for his family that will be cherished for generations.
John was born on March 8, 1943, in Brockton, Massachusetts. From an early age he possessed a quiet determination, a strong sense of duty, and a caring heart—qualities that would define the life he lived and the example he set for those around him.
In 1964, John answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Army. His military career spanned nearly three decades of honorable service. During that time, he courageously completed two tours in Vietnam, demonstrating unwavering dedication, bravery, and leadership. Through hard work, discipline, and commitment to the soldiers he mentored, John rose through the ranks and ultimately retired in 1992 as a Sergeant Major (SGM). His service to his country was a source of immense pride, and he carried the values of integrity, honor, and responsibility throughout his life.
One of the roles John cherished most during his military career was serving as a Drill Instructor and later as an ROTC Instructor. He took great pride in mentoring and shaping young soldiers and future officers, believing deeply in the responsibility of experienced leaders to guide the next generation. John understood that the strength of the Army depended not only on those serving today but also on the character, discipline, and leadership of those who would serve tomorrow. He was passionate about instilling confidence, accountability, and resilience in the young men and women he trained. For John, helping shape the future of the Army was more than a duty—it was a calling and one of the most meaningful contributions of his career.
Following his retirement from the Army in 1992, John continued his life of service to the community by working for the United States Postal Service in Brandon, Florida, where he dedicated an additional 12 years of hard work and commitment. Just as he had in the military, John approached his work with reliability, pride, and a strong sense of responsibility, forming lasting friendships with coworkers and members of the community he served.
Beyond his military accomplishments, John’s greatest pride and joy was his family. In 1965, while living in New Jersey, John met the love of his life, Georgia, through a mutual friend. Their connection was immediate and enduring. The following year, on March 4, 1966, they were married, beginning a beautiful partnership that would span 60 loving years. Together they built a life grounded in love, faith, laughter, and unwavering support for one another. Their marriage was a true testament to commitment and devotion, inspiring everyone who knew them.
John was a loving and dedicated father to his daughters, April Dunbar and Wendy Mincheff, and his son, Jon Matta. He guided them with wisdom, patience, and a steady presence, always encouraging them to work hard, care deeply, and stand strong in the face of life’s challenges.
His family continued to grow and flourish through his nine grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren, each of whom brought him immeasurable joy. To them, he was more than a grandfather—he was a storyteller, a source of guidance, and a steady pillar of love and support.
John is also survived by his sister Judy and husband Joe Creden, and his sister-in-law Carolyn Matta, along with many extended family members and friends who were touched by his kindness and generosity. He was preceded in death by his beloved brother, Jimmy, who passed away on March 6, 2022.
Those who knew John will remember a man of quiet strength, deep compassion, and unwavering devotion to the people he loved. He believed in loyalty, family, and doing what was right. His presence brought comfort, his wisdom brought guidance, and his love brought warmth to all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Though he will be deeply missed, the legacy of love, service, and dedication that John leaves behind will live on in the hearts of his family and all whose lives he touched.
His life was a testament to honor, sacrifice, and the enduring power of family.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in John Wayne Matta’s memory to the Wounded Warrior Project, supporting veterans and service members who have sacrificed so much for our country.
