Capt. Margaret "Meg" Balona (U.S. Army Ret.), left her temporary home to be with her Father in heaven on June 20, 2010. She served in the CBI Theater in World War II as a nurse. Every day of her life was devoted to her girls, Lori and Valerie. In 1991 she received her greatest gift, her grandson, Dakota who was the love of her life. She was the Mother and Grandmother most can only dream of having. She was born in Barre, Vt. and graduated from NYU. After hearing about the bombing at Pearl Harbor she enlisted. She fought in World War II, fought to have children, fought blindness, and being deaf. Her final fight she fought with courage and dignity. She loved life, but most of all she loved God. Thank you St. Jude for being with her every step, and her nurses at Brandon Hospital who nurtured and cared for us during the three months mom spent in ICU. God Bless Dr. Lorch who fought to help us. My blessed mother is survived by daughters, Valerie Anderson, Lori Balona, son-in-law, Steve, and her little man Dakota Smith; her right hand, Maggie who was not only mom’s caregiver but her guardian angel and best friend; and Sandra, who loved my mother as if she was her own; Francis and Leah Taft and Babe Aspeslagh. Mom thank you is not enough to say, I love you is not enough to say. Stay with us and give us strength to go on until we meet again. The family will receive friends 3-5 p.m., Sunday, June 27, 2010 at Stowers Funeral Home. A mass will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m., Monday, June 28, 2010 at Nativity Catholic Church.
