Born on November 3, 1940, in Quincy, IL, Sheila was the daughter of Marjorie and Chester Myers. She was later the beloved daughter of her stepfather, Ralph Myers.
Sheila grew up in southeast Iowa and graduated from Sperry High School, where she excelled as a member of the girls’ basketball team. She loved to return to Iowa to visit family and especially attend the Myers family annual 4th of July celebration. She lived in Iowa City, Iowa until she retired to be close to her daughter and spend time in the Florida sunshine. She remained an avid Iowa Hawkeye Fan her entire life.
She enjoyed working with people and had some interesting jobs including secretary to the Director of the University of Iowa Hawkeye marching band. She also owned a hearing aid business for several years and worked as the administrative assistant for the director of pastoral care at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. After retiring she volunteered her time as secretary of her home owners association and was secretary and treasurer of First Christian Church in Sun City Center, where she was an active member.
In her younger years she was an accomplished seamstress, piano player and golfer. She loved to crochet and knit and liked games, her favorites being scrabble and euchre. But the most important part of her life was her family. Sheila was a loving mother, mother-in-law, and grandmother who cherished every moment she was able to spend with her family. Sheila was known to be a strong woman who always had a positive attitude even when given tough obstacles to overcome.
She is survived by her devoted children: Sheryl Mark and her partner Duffy Murphy of Sarasota, FL; Brent Dowell and daughter-in-law Sharon Korn of Reno, NV; and Greg Dowell and daughter-in-law Jodi of Lake in the Hills, IL.
Survivors also include her beloved grandchildren: Zoe Conrady (Matt) of Chicago, IL; Sophie Dowell of Crystal Lake, IL; Trevor Dowell of Lake in the Hills, IL; Kyle Mark (Courtney) of Memphis, TN; and two great-granddaughters, Charlotte and Abigail Mark.
She is also survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Joel McKeown of Carmel, IN, and her sister-in-law Patti Myers of Sperry, IA, along with many nieces and nephews, and devoted friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Robert Myers.
A big part of Sheila’s life was her faith. Her church family was very important to her and she never missed a Sunday unless she was ill. In lieu of flowers please make donations to First Christian Church of Sun City Center.
A celebration of life for Sheila will be held Saturday, May 17, 2025 at 11:00 AM at First Christian Church Sun City Center, 1707 33rd Street Southeast, Ruskin, Florida 33570.
