Shirley Louise (Hover) Rivinius, 84, of Brandon, died peacefully on Saturday, May 18, 2024, at 8:15 pm surrounded by her loving family at HCA Florida South Shore Hospital in Sun City Center. Born in Everett, Massachusetts, Shirley resided in the area until she came to Florida in 1987 from Billerica. For short stints, she also resided in Germany, Indiana, California, and Virginia.
A proud 1961 graduate of Mount Auburn Hospital School of Nursing, Shirley was a registered nurse who practiced until her first child Sherri was born. While raising her four children, Shirley worked at a hobby and a Christmas shop, decorating cakes, and as a care giver to elderly residents of a local retirement community. A devoted Christian, Shirley served as an elder, a deacon, and many other volunteer positions for Presbyterian churches in Massachusetts, Florida, and California. She loved every opportunity for fellowship, food, and travel with others as a member of a travel club, Beta Sigma Phi, and the Red Hat Society.
Shirley has now joined her beloved spouse, Roger William Rivinius, who died in 1998. Shirley is predeceased by her parents, Harmon “Harry” and Ethel “Louise” (Pearse) Hover. Her survivors include her sister June Rivinius of Charlotte, NC (whose spouse, Roger’s younger brother, Dick, died in October 2023); daughter Sherri Copeland (Nate) of Manassas, VA; sons Scott (DeeLynn) of Boca Raton, FL; Mark of Leesburg, VA; and Keith (Amy) of Gardnerville, NV; nieces Cindy Pope (David) of Marshfield, MA and Beth Brown (Justin) of Charlotte, NC; nephew Gregg Rivinius (Emily) of Nashua, NH; and seven grandchildren: Brianna Copeland (Shay Whetzel) and Kayla Clippinger (Alex), both of Harrisonburg, VA; Matthew and Daniel of VA; Dougie of FL; and, Ryker and Ayden of NV. Shirley loved her extensive Hover/Pearse families and her late in-laws Shepley and Virginia Ross and their children: Shepley “Chip” Ross, Jr, (Karen); Judy Frase (Steve); Karen Harton (Tom); and the late Willliam “Billy” Ross (Gwen).
A visitation will be held at 1:30 pm on Sunday, May 26, 2024, at the Presbyterian Church of Bloomingdale (710 E. The service will be live streamed on the church’s FaceBook page. Arrangements are being handled by Stowers Funeral Home. Shirley will be interned with Roger at Florida National Cemetery at a later date.
