Peacefully, in Toronto, Ontario, on October 5, 2014, age 87 years. Faithful wife of the late Imre Peter Pongrac. Lovingly remembered by her children, Peter, Ann (Kevin), John (Jo-Anne), and Mary Beth. A caring and devoted mother, she will be missed by all. Proud grandmother of Alanna, Angela, Adrianna, Kayla, Blair, and Sarah. Mary leaves behind her sister, Margaret (Maggie) Hunter. Pre-deceased by her brothers, John and Robert (Rab).
Mary was committed to her work and her church. She spent many years as an Occupational Therapist at the Brantford General Hospital, giving of her skill and compassion to the patients there. In 1973, she moved on to the Hamilton Psychiatric Hospital, where she acquired a management position in Occupational Therapy, until her retirement in 1992. Following retirement, Mary volunteered at the Brantford General Hospital and St. Joseph’s Hospital. Mary loved her work, her church and her friends. She was one of the first female elders elected to serve in her church and gave of herself to the church itself and the congregation for decades. She paid regular visits to “shut-ins”, members of the church who could no longer attend services. She was physically active throughout her life, with skiing and tennis being her favourite sports, and she loved to travel; cross-stitch, puzzles and genealogy were some of her hobbies. She loved playing bridge and lunching with friends, and looked forward to the challenge of the daily cryptic crossword, not only to keep her mind active, but also to revel in the enjoyment of learning. She enjoyed family gatherings, including birthday celebrations and holidays, especially Christmas. Mary is fondly remembered as so very kind and compassionate, wise and dignified, and also for having such a great sense of humour.
Special thanks to Velma Calliste and the staff at Bendale Acres Long-term Care Facility, for their kind and compassionate care. A Private Family Service will take place. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation to Alexandra Presbyterian Church in Brantford, or the Salvation Army - Brantford Branch.
