At age 86, Shirley Farrugie, who was affectionately known as "Nanny" to her many grandchildren and great grandchildren, passed away peacefully on Oct 31st with her children by her side. It is hard to imagine a life without her as a pillar in the lives of the many people who knew and loved her. The story of Shirley's life was one of love, laughter, family, and friendship. She was married to her lifelong love Ken Farrugie, who sadly passed on far too early. They shared a beautiful life together raising their 5 children. The Farrugie family home on Powerline Rd in Brantford will forever be a place remembered for the pool parties, gathering with friends and family, and the sounds of Shirley's infectious laughter. She loved to be at the centre of it all, and she lived for having her loved ones close by. Shirley was so proud of the family she created, and would often proclaim that she had "15 regular, and 15 great [grandchildren]". Her family was large, loud, and very close with each other, and at the centre she would sit and smile with a seeming awareness that everything she ever wanted from life is all around her, and it was perfect. Shirley will be forever cherished and remembered by her children Dale & Rob Lockington (predeceased), Wayne & Debbie Farrugie, Karen Thornton and Steve Van Der Loo (predeceased by Earl Thornton), Robert Farrugie & Gillian Van Luven, and Sandra & Dave Dobinson (predeceased); her "regular" grandchildren Grant & Rachel Rushton, Jennifer & Scott Rossi, Brent & Ela Farrugie, Tyler & Jou Lockington, Jamie & Joanna Rushton, Kenny Farrugie, Nikki Lockington & Chris Reynolds, Jena & Robbie Curtis, Jill & Kevin Fisher, Kyle Farrugie & Brooke Hogarth, Kevin Farrugie & Rubin Kataki, Zak Dobinson & Mel Walker, Emma Dobinson & Robbie Normand, Allison Dobinson & Matthew Kernaghan, and Will Farrugie; and "great" grandchildren Ella & Eli Rushton, Jared & Parker Rossi, Livia & Richard Farrugie, Sam & Ben Rushton, Logan & Sebastian Farrugie, Kane, Mason & Nash Curtis, Jake, and Ryan Fisher.
Predeceased by Shirley's siblings, Bernie Smith, Ross Smith, Don Smith, Laurine Sherred, Marie Oliver. The world is a little less without Shirley. The mother, Nanny, great Nanny, sister, and friend that so many of us have been blessed to have known. Rest in peace Nanny.
