Charles (Harry) Irwin was born on March 13, 1938 in Seattle, Washington. He passed away on Oct. 19, 2018 in Silverdale, Washington surrounded by his family. He had been a 40 year resident of Steilacoom, Washington.
His parents were Charles (Harry) Irwin and Marion (Schirber) Irwin.
His early years were spent in Seattle, moving to Bremerton while he was in elementary school. He graduated from Bremerton High School in 1956 and attended St. John’s University in Minnesota.
He served his country in the National Guard and soon after began a career in sales. That introduction to the world of sales led him to the career he enjoyed until his retirement, auto sales. Harry had a lifelong passion for cars. He loved to drive, he liked to talk about cars, he enjoyed working on cars, he collected model cars, he attended car shows, he belonged to the Handlers Car Club in his youth and as a senior, but more importantly, he loved the auto business. He began his auto sales career with Chuck Haselwood, and went on to own two local businesses, the first with his business partner and good friend, Morris Hightower, and the second business on his own. He ended his sales career as a valued member of the team at Topping Motors in Tacoma.
He was married to Carolyn Ruth in 1963. They had three children, Lori, Michael and Stephanie (Ken) Hall. They divorced in 1980.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a nephew, Steven Abend .
He is survived by his three children, his grandchildren, Annalise, Jack and Jonah Irwin, and Hailey Hall, his sister, Beatrice (Jack) Kingery and nephews John and Greg Kingery and niece Missy O’Neill and their families and sister, Margaret (Carl) Abend and niece Kathleen Graham, and nephews Rick and Mark Abend and their families. Harry had a close relationship with his cousins, Claudia Stewart and, George and Ed Johnson and their families.
Harry leaves behind lifelong friends, colleagues, neighbors, fellow parishioners at St. John Bosco Catholic Church in Lakewood and all those who supported him in recent months.
While his passion for cars remained constant throughout his life he also enjoyed boating, riding motorcycles, dirt and street bikes and playing cribbage. In his retirement he traded some of those activities for bicycling and golfing. True to his love of driving, he volunteered with the AAA Roadwise Driver program to enable other senior drivers to refresh their driving skills.
Services will be held on November 9th at 11:00 am at St. John Bosco Catholic Church, 10508 112th St. SW, in Lakewood, Washington.
