Born December 26, 1934 in Niota Illinois, Doris went home to be with the Lord on October 18, 2022. She is preceded in death by her parents Dwight Sparrow and Fern (Heberer) Sparrow, her sister, Margaret (Sparrow) Whitson and her husband of fifty eight years, Gilbert Blom. She is survived by their children, Dennis Wayne Blom (Jan) of Dublin, California, Glenda Sue Wilson (Dan) of Silverdale, Washington, Galen Eugene Blom (Tammie) of Houston, Texas, Delbert Lynn Blom (Alison) of Houston, Texas, and Gwen Renee Finnegan (Chris) of Bremerton, Washington, 16 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Charles Sparrow (Nancy) and sister, Irene Hulett (Dave).
Doris worked as a homemaker for over sixty years and relocated several times when her husband’s job moved their family from Des Moines, Iowa to Kansas City, Missouri to Houston, Texas and finally to Antioch, California. After Gilbert retired, they moved to Hanford, California and later to Silverdale, Washington to be near family. At each new home, Doris threw herself into local church life, serving in many roles—including nursery worker, Sunday-school teacher, choir member, and custodian. She exhibited hospitality, often sharing her famous pot roast with friends and strangers alike. She worked as a babysitter in her home while her own children were young and again in retirement, nurturing numerous other children from infancy to school age. She also worked in the high school cafeteria where her youngest children attended.
She loved her family, remaining active in the lives of her children and grandchildren. She was their biggest cheerleader and strongest advocate. Her honest interest and active involvement in all of her children and grandchildren’s activities was amazing. Doris was always in prayer for her family, writing long letters of encouragement in every birthday and Christmas card, each ending with her wish that its recipient would grow in the knowledge of God and find joy in serving Him and others. Doris also always kept in touch with her emotions. She cried and laughed often, living life on both extremes in a loving way. She shared others’ sorrows and rejoiced with their successes.
She taught all of us that the story of the world does not end in sadness and death, but rather in joy and everlasting life as it was always meant to be, for all of those who make the world’s creator the Lord of their life. It is with that hope that we know death is only temporary separation and we will all be together again as a family in a blink of an eye. Well done good and faithful servant.
