In July 1949 he enlisted in the Navy. During his military career as a Corpsman he served on the front lines with a Marine battalion during the Korean War and also served on the USS Repose during the Vietnam War. Throughout his career he was stationed at several Navy Hospitals including Quantico and Bethesda retiring at Bremerton Naval Hospital with 21 years of service.
After Don retired from the Navy he began a new career at Bremerton Children's Clinic where he worked as a lead lab technician for over 20 years.
Don married the love of his life, Virginia Frances Hawkins, on May 29, 1954 in Springfield, Virginia.
Don was the Godly pillar to his family. He is also remembered as a fun loving practical joker to those closest to him. His greatest joy in life was spending time with his family. He enjoyed several activities including family trips, camping, horseshoes, fishing and singing in his church quartet.
Don is preceded in death by his loving wife of 58 years, Virginia (Fran) Jones, his parents James and Alma Jones, his siblings Wilma Ploegsma, Jimmy Jones, Wayne Jones, Gerald Jones and Ann Schaffer, 1 grandson and 1 great-grandson.
Don is survived by his children Karen Briody of Silverdale Washington, Cheryl (Rocky) Brannon of Yuma Arizona, Cynthia (Joseph) Reddin of Bremerton Washington, David (Sheila) Jones of Silverdale Washington, Deanna (Jason) Trammell of Fredonia Kentucky, Krystal Jones of Port Orchard, 11 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren.
Services will be held at Miller-Woodlawn Monday, January 13 with a viewing at noon followed by service at 1. Open house to follow from 3-6 pm at 7628 Buckthorn Dr NE.
