

Joseph was born to Albert and Atea Gavasso on April 13, 1939 and grew up in Bellingham, MA. After high school he joined the Navy and served, 8 years in the enlisted ranks, before being selected for the Chief Warrant Officer Program. Joe retired with 21 years of service. After finishing Nuclear Power School he was assigned to the USS Nautilus (SSN-571) where he qualified on submarines and earned his Silver Dolphins.
After retiring from the Navy he became an active member of the USSVI Submarine chapter in Bremerton WA and, as Snowbirds, the Barbel Base in Yuma AZ. He was inducted into the Holland Club signifying his 50 years as a member of the submarine service. Joe was an avid fisherman and enjoyed fishing on Cape Cod during the younger years, later in many lakes in CA, AZ, WA and the oceans of SC and Guam.
Jow as a faithful member of Central Kitsap Christian Church where he grew in the faith and love of Jesus Christ and played his Bass Guitar with the Praise Team. He looked forward to Sunday service and Wednesday's Bible Study.
Joseph is survived by his wife, Irene (Bourassa) Gavasso, two sons: Joseph Jr. (Yen) of Tacoma, Ron Gavasso of Port Orchard and daughter Christine Turnley (Garry Qualman) of Bremerton. Two grandchildren: Tiphaney Turnley, Bremerton and Justin Turnley (Morgan Antrim), Bremerton. Two great grandson's Colin Petersen and Theodore Joseph Turnley, and brother Roy Gavasso of Cape Cod. Joseph was preceded in death by his parents, and sisters Marilyn Biagetti and Linda Jackson.
Memorial Services will be held on July 18, 2026 at 2:00 PM at Central Kitsap Christian Church, 6735 Stampede Blvd NW in Bremerton WA.
