Russel served in the Army in Germany from 1946 to 1949, and then worked at PSNS for 30 years, retiring as an Engineering Technician in 1980.
He married Shirley Joan Schmitz on March 16, 1951 in Seattle, WA. He was married to his loving wife for 61 years. In the past, he belonged to the Scottish Rite, Fraternal Order of Eagles (Bremerton), the American Legion (Bremerton), VFW (Bremerton), Masonic Blue Lodge of White Center, and the Kitsap Shriners.
Russel was preceded in death by his brother, Harold, daughter, Sharon, and grandson, Andy. He is survived by his wife Shirley, and children: Sandra Kennewick (Michael), Judith Thompson (James), Linda Parks (Phil), Russel M. Smith, Jr., Timothy Smith (Nancy), David Smith, Norman Smith (Karen), and Christine Knowlton (Terry). He is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren, as well as a brother, Richard, and a sister, Carole.
Services will be held at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home. Visitation will be Wed, Dec 5 from 12 – 8 pm and Friday, Dec 7 from 11:30-12:30. Funeral Service will be at 1:00 pm on Friday Dec 7.
