Sylvia Thelma Pykonen died peacefully at home on April 30th, 2025, in Bremerton Washington after battling colon cancer. There will be a graveside service at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home and Memorial Park located at 5505 Kitsap Way at a time and date to be announced
Mrs. Pykonen was born Sylvia Thelma Remick in Newburyport, Massachusetts on May 7, 1940. After her family moved to Washington State she attended Bremerton High School from the 9th through 12th grade and in December of 1957 she married her first husband Gary Douthit. Together they raised one daughter and three sons. For many years, the family resided in what was referred to as the "Brown House" on Barnett Street, named after the color the house was painted. It was located next door to her parents, Herman and Thelma Remick, who provided wonderful support in raising the children. After her divorce from Gary Douthit, Sylvia married Richard "Dick" Peterson and together they enjoyed several eventful years in Fairbanks, Alaska. Upon Richard's retirement, they returned to live in Bremerton until his sudden passing. Sylvia later married Paul Pykonen and spent many happy years with him. She enjoyed gardening and walking around the neighborhood with her dog. Sylvia was a very gregarious person and enjoyed the company of many friends in her lifetime. She had a wonderful taste in music, and at any time of night, you might hear songs from Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, Nat King Cole, Ray Charles, Elvis Presley (her favorite), or even Leftover Salmon filling the room. Sylvia's kindness towards her friends, neighbors and family will be deeply missed by us all.
She was preceded in death by her parents Herman and Thelma Remick, her brother Edward and grandson Joe. Sylvia is survived by her daughter Melody, her three sons Michael, Martin, and Mitchell as well as her grandchildren Jayson, Megan, David, Samantha, Stephanie and great-grandchildren Adriana and Gary. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers Sylvia requested donations be made to the local Humane Society.
