Today is the day one year ago that you left us. I am still in shock. We still miss you a whole lot, that will never change.
Your '24 T is in good hands in California.

I remember bringing up the pink and white 1956 Pontiac to your shop to do body and paint. I travelled back and fourth every weekend untill it was done.I was getting tired of the project and I think you were too, however you never complained. You were painting the last coat of paint and here comes the sheriff. She said " it is a 10,000 dollar fine if you continue to paint". You said "but I am so close to being done". She said "how much longer?" You said "I need 30 minutes to finish the job right". She said "I will be back in 35 minutes and if you are still painting the 10,000 dollar ticket will be yours".
With that she left. You jumped back in the building and continued to paint and 20 minutes later you emerged from the building and said you were done. I assume it was done right as it is a beauty. The sheriff came back when she said she would and seemed pleased when you announced you were finished. I never got to pay you back for the fine job you did on the car and a fender bender to our '70 GTO you repaired. The '56 Pontiac was the last car out of D and H Auto Body. We still have the '56 and probably always will. Thank you Wayne.

I remember a fishing trip in your huge Chrysler New Yorker. We were on a service road going up a pretty steep hill. We came across a rock slide blocking our path. We got out and looked the situation over. On the right side was a cliff, on the left a hill side where the rocks came from. You said "I think we can jump over it". I wanted nothing to do with it and I don't remember if Roy got back in the car or not, I know I didn't. I watched from the side lines as you backed the car up 40 yards or so and gunned it. Dust and rocks flew and the car started moving with the motor pretty much at the rev. limit. You and the New Yorker flew over the rocks and after you finally came to a stop on the other side with the dust still in the air,and the rocks trying to find a place to settle, you said something to the effect, "Ok, let's go, the fish are waiting".

I am so sorry I missed the reunions, now especially because of Waynes' passing...I really loved him alot and I know he loved me too,at least the kind of love you  have for someone in High School..We shared alot of things, cars, motorcycles and good times...I miss  him so much,he was a really good guy...Teresa (Rutherford)Smith,  I miss you Wayne

I remember one Christmas, when Wayne got a sciece experiment kit.  It was a quiet Sunday afternoon, when Dad, Mom and I heard a loud BOOM!  We all ran to his bedroom to find a Lot of stuff spattered on the ceiling!  He lost his science kit after that.  Don't know if he ever got it back.

I remember your Pontiac GTO, you had removed the rear seat and you and Vern making a run to Idaho for Coors beer because you couldn't buy Coors in Oregon or Washington at the time. You filled the inside of the car and the trunk and stopped by Portland and shared some of the beer with us.

I remember the "famous" family trip of 1959 in our 1951 Ford to Yellowstone Park. There was a traffic jam in the middle of the park due to bears begging for food at the windows of the cars. You were eating a sandwich at the time, as a bear approached, you rolled down your back window and preceded to tease the bear with your sandwich, offering it to him, then taking it away as if it was a puppy, you were having a great time. When dad found out what you were doing, your "great time" was over. That was a few days before the great Yellowstone earthquake and floods. We left the park maybe 3 or 4 days before that.

My best memories of Uncle Wayne will always be the camping trips.  The ones that I spent with Uncle Wayne as an adult were fun...but I really loved the trips I took as a kid with him.  Building forts, campfires, camping at Mt. Rainier, stopping at the store before hitting the road Uncle Wayne always let us kids stock up on orange soda and tons of candy, loud music and playing games in the back of the big van, playing and making memories with all my cousins.  My Uncle Wayne was a wonderful human being, someone that always cared about you and always wanted to know what you were doing, how you were, that you were alright.  He cared more for others than himself.  You are truly missed.  I am a better person for having known you and had you in my life.  Love and miss you Uncle Wayne..until we meet again. I didn't get a chance to know Wayne real well. But spent a few days over New Years with the family. I had an amazing time with them all. I got the chance to talk to Wayne quite a bit, about music, hot rods, drag races, and car shows. He was an amazing man. My heart goes out to the whole family. Mark and Paula (and Mike too), you guys did an amazing job. Your dad is proud! Gary, Bonnie, and Roy, keep telling the stories! They are great! and he lives on through them!! I remember we got new boxing gloves for Christmas, and even though you were younger, I had to watch out for your left hook as you were left handed. I got a new bicycle for Christmas and you got a new hammer, the next day I heard pounding in the garage, sure enough, you were enjoying your new hanmmer on my new fenders. I sold flower seeds and one of the prizes I could order was a BB gun. You barrowed it, to this day there is a BB hole in Mom's dining room window. You were always full of life and never a dull moment.

I remember: you as a small child getting run over by a car in a parking lot and you tumbled out behind with hardly a scratch.Getting yourself on fire in the front yard, and Ray Showman coming from next door and putting out the flames and you carried a scar on your lower leg for the rest of your life. A fishing trip to a clear lake that you could see deep down and even though we used the same bait, every fish came to yours. Going to the drag races and bringing nothing to eat and no money, stopped at a store and ate samples. I have many memories and I hope to add more to this site.

Visiting with Wayne at all of our family get togethers will be sadly missed. I always enjoyed getting updates on the project car and other family functions. I am glad that Wayne was able to finish the car but sad that he wasn't able to enjoy it in the years to come.

Wayne was my younger brother in my heart for nearly 44 years--not long enough.

I will especially miss the genuine interest he had in others, his ease around people, his diverse interests, his cute dimples and wonderful laugh.  I will also miss the fun we would have had in the future.  Family get togethers will be especially tough.

He left 2 great legacies--his children, who turned out to be people we can be proud of ,as I know he was.

Dad, I am grateful to have walked the earth with you for my 35 years of life. You taught me to see the best in people and to live life to the fullest. You continue to inspire me to be a better person. I am very proud to be a Howard and especially proud to be your daughter. You, Mark and I will always be the "Three Musketeers." I miss you so much that it hurts but I have found comfort in knowing we will see each other again someday. I love you dad!

Dad, I love you. I have the upmost respect for who you were as a man and your outlook on life. You always saw things in a positive manner or saw the good in people; a glass half full kind of man. You put friends and family ahead of yourself and went out of your way to make people happy. Your example has made me a better person. As witnessed by the standing room only crowd at your memorial service, you touched many lives; this is a testament to who you were.

You will be missed greatly, never forgotten and we will be reunited someday. Until then…….

We were so sorry to hear of Wayne's passing.  We were fortunate to have had the opportunity to visit with him at the class reunion.  He was a blessed man to be so loved by family and friends.  Our prayers go out to all he touched in this life.

Wayne and I were very close made and shared alot of good memories over the years still a shock he is gone, miss him very much,will try to live my life with as much passion as he did always love you brother.

I felt very privileged to know Wayne.  He also was a good friend of my husband Bill Bode who has passed on also.  Wayne always had a smile on his face and some kind of interesting story to tell. Two things that I remember about Wayne from high school were that he was very friendly and that he liked cars. I was glad I was able to talk to him at the 60th birthday party last summer and was glad to see that he was still very friendly and that he still liked cars. Some people lose interest in the things that they were passionate about when they were younger, but not Wayne.  He was a person who lived his life to the fullest.

I will always remember my Uncle Wayne, he was always in a good mood and was so fun to be around and made me laugh. I have so many memories of him as I was growing up, I will cherish them always. Rest in peace Uncle Wayne. Love Dayle,Julie & Garrett.

Though separate from our hands, you live on in our hearts.

Wayne, you were undoubtedly my best friend. Your warm smile and handshakes made me feel more like a brother to you. All the fun rides in the Model T and the barbeques in the back yard. All the auto body work on my cars and getting my Harley trike on the road in the past years done by you will never be forgotten. We had a lot of good times. You will always be in my mind and heart, I will never forget you; my  best friend; Wayne.
My deapest sympathy to Mark and Paula and the entire family. God bless all of the Howard family, I felt like one of them. Wayne will be deeply missed by me, always had a smile on and good humor.

I am privileged to have known Wayne. He was so pure of heart and enjoyed all the simple things around him. He did not take anything or anyone for granted. I remember us hiking with him (never on a trail!) and he just took everything in with such enthusiasm and he wanted to share it with everyone. Fishing in Aberdeen (and getting double speeding tickets) is a trip I’ll always remember – it was so wonderful of him to arrange that for us; I still have the sweatshirt from that trip!

It’s insignificant to pass my condolences to Joyce and Red, but they are in my thoughts as well. I can’t imagine surviving my child.

I am so sorry for your loss.  When I moved from CA to WA State in fourth grade Wayne was one of the nicest people I met.  I doubt anyone knew this but Sandy White and I thought it would be cool to like the same guy.....we chose Wayne!  My dad remembers Wayne coming by for his furnace and sends his condolences as well.

There was never a time whenever I saw Wayne whether at work, class reunion, or just at the store, he had a smile, a great handshake, with a lot of good conversation.  He also wanted how things were going and if I was still running, which I am.  I will miss his friendship and his very positive attitude on life.  Bonnie, I am very sorry for your loss.

I have good memories of Wayne. He was always cheerful and smiling whenever I would see him. We would talk briefly and then be on our separate ways. Wayne was always busy with his work and his hobby, but he had time to chat for a few minutes. I will miss those times of meeting. --Farewell to a wonderful man.

Dear Bonnie and the rest of the Howard family,
   Wayne's friendship with my brother Dave and his wife Sandra in Wyoming meant a great deal to both of them.  He was generous of spirit and had the capacity to look past the superficial to the substance that really matters in each in each of us.  I will remember his warmth and humor, and I am grateful for the kindness he has always shown my brother.

Wayne ended up at our home a few years back and we had a great visit with him.  He will be missed.  Take care and our sympathy to his family and friends.

I remember Wayne and Bonnie---even after 40+ years--nicest people ever. We had several conversations that I remember still. Hope to meet Bonnie at a reunion sometime. Wayne was the best---we did have great times. He was special and will be greatly missed.

Although I knew Wayne in high school, it has only been in the last few years that he became to me a true Friend.  Only three months ago, we ran into each other in a supermarket, had a nice long chat and a warm hug.  I really intended to make a special point of visiting with him on my next trip back home to Bremerton.  Friendship came too late - he left us too soon.  Hugs to his family and all who loved him.

God Bless - It has been a good long trip - anyone who has loving family that says the things about you that they have said - was very wealthy indeed!

Bonnie, Although I have only seen Wayne at the reunion since high school, I have fond memories of what a sweet, kind and funny guy he could be. He was such an all round good guy. I was saddened to hear of his passing but know we will all be together again one day. My deepest condolences to your family.

Dear Howard family - It was a delight to see Wayne this past summer (and his fabulous restored car) at the East High School Class of '68 gathering.  We shared some great memories of good old days now long gone by.  My heartfelt sympathies to your family.

Wayne was a very loving brother.  I  miss him very much.  I thought we had lots more time together.  I am so glad I saw him two weeks before he passed.  I will hold on to the hugs I got that day. Our family has a big void now.  Wayne was a huge part of every holiday-especially Christmas and Labor Day campouts.  He loved being around family.  Our memories will have to last. I will miss my uncle Wayne, he was always fun to be around. Some of my favorite memories were camping every labor day and sitting around the camp fire and listening to his stories and laughing(Especially the hair ball story of his cat ha). No matter what happened in his life he always had a positve spin on things and could always see the good in everything. If I can learn and grow and be anything like my uncle Wayne I am so fortunate in this life. I love you uncle Wayne and you will live forever in my heart!

Wayne; You left this world too soon. I never said I loved you enough. I wish I could turn the page back for another try. You met life with a lot of energy, that never changed. We will meet again and talk hot rods.I love you.

Dear Wayne, you were always so kind and sweet to everyone you met,I was always so proud to know you...I am so sorry we have not seen each other in so many years, you were the first love of my life and my great friend and even though I haven't seen you in a long time I will miss you sweetie,always be you Love Teresa.

My earliest thoughts of Wayne are sitting next to him in Miss Martin's French class at East High School. Since graduation in 1968 we would cross paths from time to time. I remember when he had the body shop down in Tracyton, and then years later Dana's sent a technician out to repair my daughter's furnace, and I was surprised to find it was Wayne. We had a good chat then, as always. I was shocked to hear of his death. He was a good guy, and will be missed. My prayers are with his family at this time.

My Uncle Wayne was a great man. He loved to talk, but he also loved to listen. He rarely put himself before others, always interested in hearing about their adventures and opinions. He had such a big heart and presence in our family. He will be greatly missed. Love you always.

I was so sorry to learn of Waynes Passing. Our chrome shop had the pleasure of being a special part in his restoration of his beautiful blue car. In Waynes many trips to the shop we so enjoyed hearing how it was all coming together, and when he showed up one sunny day and surprised us it was a treat for my employees to see their hard work had paid off and made that blue color just shine, it was a great day for us, so good in fact it was one of the cars chosen to put in our new web site . Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family Wayne will surely be missed. We will enjoy in the pictures we took of him and his car that day.

You run as hard and as fast as you can, and when you tire and have to rest, you hope you're remembered as a good friend. You were very good friend Wayne.

Wayne, I've known you since grade school, and it was so very nice to say hello again at our recent reunion.  Guess neither one of us knew it was also goodbye.  Take care until our next reunion, okay?

Wayne was our HVAC service technician for a number of years until last fall when we were informed he no longer was working.  We were disappointed to learn this because he was extremely competent and very personable and we enjoyed his annual visits.  We are sorry to learn of his passing.

Wayne was a lot of fun and we enjoyed getting to know him (again) because of the EHS Class of 1968 gatherings.  He will be missed.
