

Today, we celebrate Alfred Phillip Whitmore, also affectionately known as Coco, Phil, Al, Bert and Alfred P. Alfred was born at DC General Hospital on September 18, 1947 to the late Solomon and Elnora Whitmore. He transitioned from this life on February 19, 2025 at the age of 77.
In 1966, Alfred graduated from Phelps Vocational High School with a concentration in Radio-TV and immediately went to work at Judd & Detweiler Printing Plant. Alfred was inducted in the United States Army on August 24, 1967 and after training he was deployed to Germany. He served his country honorably and received the National Defense Medal. After his discharge from the military he returned home and to his job at Judd & Detweiler. He remained employed there until the company permanently closed.
Alfred also worked at Editor’s Press and won an appointment on March 19, 1990 to the Bureau of Engraving & Printing as a Pressman. He retired after eighteen years on May 23, 2008.
Alfred married the late Viceta Whitmore and was blessed with a son, Alfred, Jr. During his younger days, he enjoyed roller skating. He was an excellent skater and could be found skating at the National Arena and Kalorama Skating Rinks with family and friends. Alfred joined the American Legion Post 275 on January 25, 2010 where he would support programs for veterans. He was a die-hard Washington Redskins/Commanders fan. He was deeply invested in their success and felt the highs and lows of every game and he maintained a collection of hats, jackets and jerseys.
Alfred loved family events and gatherings. These tender moments included spending time with his son, Alfred, Jr., the the birth of his grandson, Darrius, reunions, cookouts, pool parties, traveling, hand dancing, visiting his cousins in Philadelphia, BINGO and events at the American Legion Post 275. He was baptized August 26, 2001 at Greater Refuge Temple Church in Washington, DC.
Alfred was predeceased by his parents and brothers Solomon Whitmore, Jr. and MacArthur "Mackie" Whitmore. Alfred is survived by his loving son, Alfred Whitmore, Jr. (Marquetta); grandson, Darrius; loving and devoted companion of 20 years, Drema; sisters, Mary Kuntoh, June Smith, Yvonne Bryson and Beatrice Whitmore; brothers, Stanley Whitmore (Jewell) and Wallace Whitmore (Yolanda); a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
