Alma Legette (née Maison) was born on April 28, 1943, in British Guiana (now Guyana) and grew up in the village of Nabaclis on the East Coast of Demerara. She was a beloved daughter of Egland Maison and Margaret “Iris” Maison (née Solomon), and the sixth of their seven children. Alma is survived by her sister, Waveney, and was predeceased by her siblings Enid, Oswald, Bertram, Jean and McLean. Alma received her early education at Golden Grove Methodist Primary School before attending Chatham High School in Georgetown. After completing her studies, she began her career as a teacher at Enmore Government School.
She married Walter Patrick Kendall and together they welcomed two daughters, Lyselle and Michelle.
In 1972, Alma moved to New York City, where she embarked on a long and distinguished career in healthcare. She attended Martha Washington Nursing School, earning her LPN degree, and later continued her studies at Marymount University in Virginia, where she graduated with a BSN in Nursing.
As a dedicated Registered Nurse, Alma served at Howard University Hospital and later at Washington Hospital Center for over 40 years. She was deeply respected by her colleagues and known for her compassion, skill, and unwavering commitment to patient care. Alma lived her life fully and joyfully. She was an avid traveler whose adventures took her across West and East Africa, Europe, the Caribbean, and Thailand. At home, she delighted in baking, generously sharing her creations with family and friends. Her exceptional culinary skills were honed at the respected Carnegie School of Home Economics in Georgetown, Guyana, which she proudly attended. She leaves to cherish her memory her daughters, Lyselle and Michelle, her sons-in-law Donal and Ian, beloved grandchildren Jack and Sophia, who brought immense joy to her life, and her multitude of loving nieces and nephews. Alma’s legacy is one of kindness, resilience, and grace. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew and loved her.
