Betty Amentris Scott, affectionally known to many as “Ment,” passed away peacefully on December 6, 2025. She was born in Halifax, N.C., on February 23, 1939, the second-youngest child of the late Jasper R. and Louise Lane Scott. Ment was educated in the Halifax County and Weldon, N.C., school systems, where she was a good student and played on the varsity basketball team. (She noted to family and friends later on how cold it was in school gyms while playing basketball games.)
Like many of her siblings, Ment moved to Washington, D.C., as a young adult in search of better employment opportunities. She
lived in Washington for more than 60 years, and worked for many years at The Villanova, one of the first black-owned restaurants on Capitol Hill, with its owner and the love of her life, Montera Davis. Later, Ment managed restaurants for the Teamster’s Union until her retirement, and her joyful personality and beautiful smile delighted every patron she met.
Ment found true happiness in attending church and getting together with family and close friends. She often told her children that one of the most important things in life was to keep in touch and stay connected to loved ones. Her family meant the world to her; she was especially close to her six sisters, and fiercely defended and supported them through good times and challenging events. She could not stomach bullies and counseled her children to never back down from one. Her house was always in order, and chores were handed out to her boys like military assignments. She loved talking on the phone and would quickly call family and friends to check in. Ment was the life of every party, loved to dance, and her warm, sweet spirit made all who knew her feel instantly welcomed.
She leaves behind her three devoted sons, Kosmo DeFacto (DeNeal), Victor M., and Gregory L. Scott; her grandchildren, Lakisa, Mia, Aria, Michael, and Brandon; her great-grandchildren, Paris, Lakaya, Amian, Mason’ J, Nyok,i and Kiiumi; her great-great-grandchild, Myai; and a host of nieces and nephews, especially her loving niece Lorraine, whom Ment treated like a daughter. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Raymond Lane, Jasper Leon Scott, Lillian Green, Alfreda Williams, Willa Belle (Bootsy) Roberts, Doretha Batchelor, Yvonne Miller, and Alma Johnson.
The Scott family will receive friends on Sunday, December 21, 2025 at Fort Lincoln Funeral Home beginning at 12:30 pm. The Funeral Service will follow at 1:30pm. Those unable to attend the services my join the livestream by clicking here: https://client.tribucast.com/tcid/c25125881572279
