With profound love and a sad heart, we announce the passing of Cassandra Alfreda Michelle Isom, a beloved mother, sister, aunt, mentor, and friend. Born at Freedmen’s Hospital in Washington, DC, Cassandra was the cherished daughter of the late Liddell Isom Jr. and Inez Ruth Isom. She departed this life on August 2, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of grace, intellect, humor, and unwavering love.
A proud native Washingtonian, Cassandra graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School before going on to complete her undergraduate studies at the University of Maryland, College Park, earning a dual degree in Psychology and Sociology. She later obtained a master’s degree in Education from Bowie State University. Though she began working toward her PhD, she famously decided she was “fabulous enough.”
Cassandra’s career in public service was distinguished and impactful. She began as a Presidential Management Intern, a prestigious program preparing young professionals for leadership roles in government. She brought her passion for growth and development to several federal agencies, beginning at the Department of Labor in the Human Resources Training Office, then moving to the Office of Personnel Management, and later, the Small Business Administration as a Training Manager. Her journey led her to the Department of Defense, where she oversaw training and development at the U.S. Naval Observatory. Ultimately, she served as the Assistant Director and Acting Director for the Office of Science Education at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), where she founded Sci-Life—a groundbreaking program aimed at inspiring underprivileged and minority youth to pursue careers in STEM.
Cassandra had an indelible sense of style, a radiant spirit, and a zest for life. Known to many as a diva in the most affectionate sense, she loved shopping, traveling, watching movies, reading, and joyfully singing along to Luther Vandross. A lover of sterling silver, fashion, and people-watching, she brought elegance and laughter wherever she went. More than anything, she loved her family with all her heart and soul.
She is survived by her devoted daughter, Diandra Isom-Perry (Jalen), and her beloved four-legged grandchild, Marty Isom-Perry. She also leaves behind her loving siblings: Ivy Washington (James), Reginald Isom (Sarah), and Jerrold Isom (Lois); a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and cherished friends who adored her deeply.
Cassandra’s faith remained strong throughout her life. She believed in trusting the Lord and His perfect timing. Though her beautiful life has come to a close, we find comfort in the beautiful memories she leaves behind.
Her presence, her laugh, her wisdom, and her love will forever echo in the hearts of those who knew her..
