He was born in Washington, DC on December 18, 1939 to Clarence (Billy) Wharton and Louise T. Butler. He was affectionally called Bobby by all. He was raised in Georgetown and attended DC Public Schools. He was the eldest of 6 siblings: Susan and Jacqueline Williams; Winston Hillman (Michelle Scott Hillman, wife); Nicola, Peter, and Rochelle Wharton.
His first job was at Capital Cadillac. From there he went on to work for Fruit Growers Express and then on to Amtrak. He retired from Amtrak in 2002. He was a member of the Railroad Retirement Board.
Bobby was preceded in death by his beloved wife Sadie who passed away in 2022. They were married for over 50 years. She was the love of his life. Whenever you saw one, the other was not far behind. Their love was a beautiful thing.
Bobby is the father of Michelle Barnes and Anthony Wharton. He also took on the role of dad for Sadie’s sons Gregory, Michael, and Barry Petway. His grandchildren are Marcus Arbritton, Anthony (Ant) Wharton, and Tanaya Wharton. He is also the great grandfather of Marcus Arbritton, Jr. and Mila Arbritton. His nephews and nieces include Nicholas Porter, Kwari Harvey, Ashley Green, Micayah Hillman, and Charia Wharton, as well as a host of cousins, great nieces, and nephews.
Bobby was a kind and humble man. There was nothing he wouldn’t do to help someone out if he could. He loved his family and friends dearly. He enjoyed family trips, especially his cross-country trips on Amtrak. He also loved his Redskins (Commanders) and was a true and devoted fan.
Bobby will be truly missed by all. May he rest in eternal peace.
