Dorothy was born July 25, 1923 in Washington, D.C. to Ivory C. Harris and Lucille Hardy.
She attended Garnett Patterson School in Washington and later the Palmer Institute in Sedalia, North Carolina. During her school years, she spent a significant amount of time with relatives throughout North Carolina who always supported and stuck by her.
In 1954, Dorothy married William Lawson Alexander. William and Dorothy had two sons.
Dorothy worked as an analyst for the United States Department of the Treasury, Bureau of Engraving and Printing for 40-years. She often noted how fortunate she was to have had the position and for so long.
After retirement, she took great pride in doing volunteer work with several organizations, including the Washington chapter of Job Corps and the National Council of Negro Women.
During her volunteer days she always enjoyed working on projects that helped young people, especially those who had no family and needed guidance. During this period, her philosophy was simple. She would always tell you "Life was a learning experience. Keep learning and always help others along the way while appreciating the beauty in others."
Dorothy was a member of the First Baptist Church in Northwest Washington, D.C. in the Petworth community. In recent years she was always grateful and looked forward to the Deacons who made sure she received Holy Communion every month. She loved the visits to the home and the joy they brought her.
Dorothy is survived by two sons. William Alexander and George Alexander. Nephews Paul Alexander, Ronald Alexander and Frank Lindsey. Nieces Yvette Alexander and Janice Lindsey.
Sister-in-law Diane Alexander.
