Dorothy E. (Campbell) Jones was born on September 22, 1933 in Kearneysville, West Virginia. One of 8 children, she was the 5th born to the late Donald and Sarah Campbell. She was the loving sister of siblings Virginia, Thelma, Helen, Louise, Gladys, Pauline and Shirley who have preceded her in death.
Dorothy grew up in Charles Town, West Virginia and attended school in Jefferson County, graduating from Page-Jackson Senior High School. After graduation, she moved to Washington, DC where she met and married the late Dennis Jones. She was a working mother who worked many jobs before ending her career at the National Institute of Health as a dietary aide.
Dorothy was a devoted Christian who accepted Christ as a young girl and was a faithful member of several churches before she became ill. As a child, she attended Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Charles Town, West Virginia and later joined Patterson Chapel Baptist Church and the Plain Truth Baptist Church in Washington, DC. The Lord blessed her with a beautiful voice which she used to sing his praises at church and at home. Family and friends often heard her singing her favorite song: “One Day at a Time.”
She touched the lives of not only her family but also those who came in contact with her. She opened her arms and heart to everyone making them all feel special. No matter what you needed, she was always there to give encouragement, money, a place to stay, a listening ear, a tongue lashing, maybe even some licks. Dorothy was also a woman of many talents. She was trained as a tailor and could sew anything – clothes, draperies, even bridal gowns. Dorothy was a fashionista, making many of the clothes she wore. She loved her family and home and always found time for decorating, crocheting, baking and home improvement projects.
Dorothy leaves to cherish her memories, five daughters, Laura Vines, Barbara Brown, Pamela Jones-Stevenson, Ionia Trusty and Denise Jones; two son-in-laws; Jerome Brown, David Trusty, eleven grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.fort-lincoln.com for the Jones family.
