

Henry Powell was born in Hyattsville, MD on December 1, 1930 to Henry Surles and Rebecca Delaney and peacefully transitioned from his earthly vessel on February 26, 2021 in his home. He lived a devoted, kind, supportive and very comical life as husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. Despite being diagnosed with Parkinson and Cancer, Henry never complained and stayed strong until the very end. He was a man that never raised his voice and always had a calm, peaceful spirit about himself. He loved our Lord Jesus Christ and leaves a legacy of integrity, respect and strength.
Henry grew up in Montgomery County, MD and attended Lincoln High School. He worked for more than 35 years at the Takoma Park Public Works Department as a Heavy-Duty Equipment Mechanic Supervisor along with being a Taxicab driver, until he could longer work due to a work related injury. During his middle-aged years, Henry went on to drive the Prince Georges County School Bus for the disabled from which he retired.
From his first matrimonial union with Rosetta Powell, who proceeded him in death, Henry was blessed with five children, Vincent Powell (deceased), Dianne Budhoo (Patrick), Corrine Kelly (Edward), Cynthia Powell-Goggans, and Sandra Powell-Lee (deceased). Henry was united in holy matrimony to Naomi Powell in 1979, with whom he lived his latter years until her transition in January 2018.
Henry was blessed with 7 brothers and 6 sisters. Proceeding him in death are Elliott Surles, Delores Kelly, Walter Powell, Paul Powell, Katherine Scott, Leon Powell, and Roger Surles.
Left to celebrate his life are his remaining siblings Jean Jones, Vernon Powell (Peggy), Linda Peterson (Wilson-deceased), Henrietta Hardy (Joseph), John Surles, Franklin Clemens, Estelle Combs; three daughters, two step-daughters Brenda Tyson and Joan McNair; eleven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; five great, great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.
