Jerome Wendell Carter, affectionately known by his family as Daddy or Grandaddy, passed away on April 19, 2025, at the age of 68. He was born on February 15, 1957, in Gloucester, Virginia, and lived a life full of love, laughter, and lessons.
To know Jerome was to know someone who would tell you exactly how he felt about you—good, bad, or somewhere in between. He told us he loved us every single day. Whether you listened to his advice or not, he still showed up for you. He showed up with a ride, with a joke, with a stubborn opinion, or with quiet loyalty. He showed up with love.
Jerome is survived by his wife, Corlis Carter; his daughters, Selena Tetteh and Jenae Carter; his son-in-law, Andrew Tetteh Sr.; his grandchildren, Mariah Tetteh, Andrew Tetteh Jr., Caleb Tetteh, and David Cook; his siblings, Delores Adona, Jane Carter, Deanna Carter, Charles Carter, George Carter, and Kevin Diggs; as well as nieces, nephews, and friends like the Kirklands, who were family in every sense of the word—people who knew him, loved him, and will never forget his presence.
He found joy in spending time with his family, using his text-to-speech to send us hilarious (and sometimes confusing) messages, and settling into a good movie or a game—especially when he could talk trash about it later. He kept us laughing.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Naomi Diggs; his brother, Russell Carter; and his nephew, Russell Carter.
Services will be held on May 8th, at Fort Lincoln Memorial. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you tell your loved ones you love them as often and as loudly as Jerome did.
Though our hearts are heavy, we’ll carry him with us in our stories, our group texts, our belly laughs, and the way we show up for each other.
