John Lee Houston

John was born May 7, 1932 in Pink Hill, NC, and was the 10th child of 17 children of William and Rilla Noble Houston.

Even though his name is John, he was known as Houston to everyone.

After their parents passed, Houston took the role of both mother and father and raised his 8 siblings.

Houston is survived by his wife Hilda G. Houston of 68 years, the love of his life, daughter LaVerne Woodson, his brother Clarence (Catherine) Houston and sister Catherine (Alvin) Pitt. Godchildren: Diamond Mayhew, Ste’fon Mayhew and Nicole Jones, along with a host of nieces, nephews, family members, sister-in-law(s) and his play sister Gloria Burns.

Houston was preceded in death by his mother: Rilla Noble Houston, father: William Houston, brothers: Frank, Earl, Fred, Lebon, Rozzele, James, Johnny, Shelton, and Thelton Houston: sisters: Rilla Battle, Thelma Craig, Sadie Brown and Roberta Houston.

Houston was an avid fan of Westerns and Walker, Texas Ranger. Loved sitting on the front porch just watching to see what was going on. Houston was well known on Girard Street by landscaping practically everyone’s yard with his sidekick Jackie. Houston also loved to travel when the opportunity came. He will be missed.
