On Tuesday, February 1, 2022, Leroy Person, loving husband, father, and grandfather, transitioned from labor to rest at the age of 86. Leroy, son of the late Santee and Bessie (Butts) Person, was born in Blackridge, VA on February 3, 1935. He was the eighth of eleven children.
He was educated in Brunswick County Public Schools and then moved to Washington, DC to pursue a career in construction. Shortly after moving to DC, he met the love of his life Nellie Hawkins and they married June 27, 1959. With vision and determination, they established the Person Concrete Company as he affectionately advertised, “A Good Person To Know.” Evidence of his successful business of over 60 years and his meticulous concrete work is visible throughout the Metropolitan area. Some of his notable projects include his custom home in Glenarden, Wild World (now Six Flags), Miller’s Farm, Capital Cadillac, and Georgetown Mall. Not to mention numerous personal driveways and patios.
An even greater accomplishment from this union were the births of three beautiful children, Sheryl, Gary, and Brian. He instilled in his children a strong work ethic, integrity, and a strong family unit. Leroy was a man of few words, but his words were impactful.
He was also known as an avid outdoorsman and loved to visit his hometown in Virginia to hunt with his family and friends. He took pride in growing his own garden. He readily shared his fresh vegetables. He also loved fishing, going to the casino with his road dogs, William (Coon) and Roz, and vacationing in Ocean City, MD with his sister Barbara Jean and brother in-law Jimmy. Leroy and Nell enjoyed taking their RV on camping trips with the Warren family and attending Redskins games at RFK Stadium.
Leroy was preceded in death by his beloved wife Nell and eight siblings: Corine, Thelma, Waverly (Johnny), Floyd, Edith, Louise, Santee Jr., and Earl.
He leaves to cherish his memory: three children Sheryl (Mitchell-deceased), Gary (Victoria), and Brian (Demica); six grandchildren, Mitchell Javon, Dia’ja “Shay”, Chanel, Ebonee, Tayler, Jabari, two great grandsons, Mitchell Javon Jr. “MJ” and Mason, one sister; Barbara Jean (Jimmy - deceased); and one brother, William; six sisters-in-law, Debra, Elaine, Jackie, Rita, Sheila, and Yvonne; two brothers-in-law, James and Joseph and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
